Silver Sliver
The other day I was watching a TV show (How it's made) where some chinese were embellishing some furniture with carvings, inlays, etc. At the end of the episode the narrator said that they rubbed tree sap on the wood. There was no further explanation of this part of the process, such as how to eliminate the stickiness of sap, mix some other ingredient with it or something else. The wood was beautiful after this treatment. Has anyone ever tried this? Is there a commercial product? Or is this just another term for turpentine? Sycamore67
Lacquer from India comes from a bug based on the following from Wikipedia. Chinese lacquer comes from certain tree saps "The term lacquer originates from the Sanskritword lākshā (लाक्षा) representing the number 100,000, which was used for both the lac insect(because of their enormous number) and the scarlet resinous secretion, rich in shellac, that it produces that was used as wood finish in ancient India and neighbouring areas.[1]"
Dan
Do some internet searches and you'll find some products that use tree sap in the finish. There are also some recipes for making a wood finish using tree sap but it seems like an awful lot to go through. It sounds like it could be fun to try but not at this time for me.
