Howdy

Guess I should probably say "hi"!  I picked up woodworking again not too long ago, since I had a couple of tools for the job ("inherited" a table saw and jig saw from my wife's grandfather, and his bandsaw that needed a lot of TLC but is back up and running...mostly...) and it didn't look like I'd be able to get to any blacksmithing classes anytime soon.  So I started simple, by making flags out of old fence sections (seems like everybody had their fences replaced last year...y'all need fence panels?  I have tons!), then I picked up a 1970's-ish Dewalt scroll saw.  I don't think I've pulled out the table saw since then.  :)  Been lurking around various scrollsaw forums and Pinterest for several months, just looking at patterns and picking up tips, and generally annoying the neighbors on the weekends with my noisy fretwork.  But I've been loving it, and look forward to learning more!

ETA:  I hang my hat in Hurst, Tx, somewhere between Dallas and Fort Worth.  And cedar pollen sucks.

Welcome to the Village from East TN.  Glad you have spoken up and joined us from the nearby village of lurkdom. :)  I am the same, tend to lurk and learn for a bit before I join in.  I joined in almost two years ago and found a great group of guys and gals here who are more then willing to help out with any and all questions and love to see pictures.  Thanks for sharing some.  These look nice and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks, all!  I hope to get back into scrolling/fretwork more in the future, things are kinda crazy at work right now and I get home and just want to disappear into a cloud of sawdust, but good quality wood tends to be pricey and the honey-doo's are stacking up.  So....maybe on the weekends.  :)

BTW, I'm seeing some interesting stuff done with multiple layers of scroll, like 3-dimensional pictures (mountains in the background, trees, etc up closer).  What I haven't been able to find, though, is what this process is called other than "awesome" and "3-D".  Any ideas on the proper terminology?

Glad to hear you found that you liked to use the scroll saw and searched around enough to find the Village. This is one of the best places to hang out as all the people here are friendly and helpful. Hope to see you logged on often. Be sure and explore all the places here as there are many interesting and informative things for you to see

Welcome Kirk - nice work and thanks for posting and contributing!

I know the "layering" projects you are talking about, I have a few of those patterns saved to do one day when I don't suck so bad.

As far as wood, I use a lot of Pallet wood for thick cuts and other wood working projects and jigs - it's free and it's everywhere. You just have to be careful with the quality of the pallet.

Here is a guide I use when I pick them up - DB HT are the ones I look for - they are usually stamped somewhere on the pallet - if not leave it where it lays

I did an entire Cleat system with pallet wood and also am in the process  of finishing a few scrolled portrait with a pallet backing

Also, there are some really good wood deals on ebay for about $40-50 for 1/8 inch BB ply or 1/4 inch BB ply

Also a nice box of 2nd's at the bottom of this page for both domestic and rare scroll all the way to the bottom
