Hi, Lew,
Looks fine to me and that's the grain orientation I would have used.
Perhaps you could have sanded the surface before cutting the project.
Also, even with good quality Baltic birch, one side usually has a better
surface with a smoother surface. Check your work piece before applying
the pattern and try to use the best surface to avoid pronounced grain or any
oval patches in the wood. It still doesn't hurt to sand the surface before applying
the pattern or using a wood sealer or conditioner before staining.

Thanks for sharing your work with us and God Bless! Spirithorse

Wabi sabi --Wabi sabi is a Japanese way of appreciating the beauty of impermanence and imperfection.
“Wabi-sabi…nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.”
Recognizing that we live in a world where perfection is impossible, wabi sabi is a way to engage the world as we find it.

I still don't see it.

I see an amazing piece of art.

Wabi sabi.
