Green EX-21 Excalibur Scroll Saw Age?

I have an opportunity to purchase an Excalibur scroll saw it is one of the green ones. My questions:

Are the green ones still made in Canada?

Also, I have the serial number and it is 21336410?

Does the 10 on the end signify the year?

Any help on identifying the age is appreciated.

Thanks

The green ones are not all made in Canada. There is a run down of the manufacturing stuff here. http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/28586-excalibur-scroll-saw-what-happened/

But a green one is manufactured before 2012. If it is before 2003 it is Canadian. However, I don't think that not being Canadian is necessarily a bad thing.

I don't know about old ex's but some machines have a date by the serial number, do you have a picture?

Tony / MrsN, thanks for the great link on the history of the Excalibur Scroll Saws. That pretty much tells it all. In review on the plate it does not say were it was made? But with your information it does tell me the approximate age that I was looking for. Not a big deal as to were it was made.

Thanks Richard

For someone who doesn't own an Ex but wants to buy one in the future, is there any particular one to stay away from? I get the feeling that no matter where it's made or who made it, people are happy with them. Can we pretty much take that to the bank? I'm watching C/L everyday for a used one and I would hate to have to worry about all the stuff before buying one. I'm sort of confused at this point.

Stay clear of any new EX made in China until we have sometime to determine if these are sound or not.  If not buying new, if the saw is in good shape and Green or Purple, you are good.  If it is black, make sure the arm tilts and not the table. (The older black EX with tilting table are no longer supported and parts are not available.)

Regardless of the saw, if it is used, you do not want to commit to a purchase until you have seen (and heard) it run through the entire speed range.

If buying new, buy King for now, or Seyco.

Thanks Randy. I won't be buying anything new unless I find buyers for the two saws I have. And, I don't really want to part with either of them.

Unless you are angle cutting, stick with your Type one.  I also have a 788 Type I and have been cutting some coins with it lately to make sure it is viable for coin cutting . . . . like I have been telling everyone it is. :-).

Thanks. I have no idea why I want to keep buying the different saws but I read stuff here and figure I must have that one or this one or whatever. I guess I should just go cut something and stop hanging out here. I get nothing done but I sure learn a lot.

That's me Ray... I have 5 saws two Hawks, DeWalt, Excalibur and a old Delta.. I'd like to get a new Jet and a Hegner to try..

Really been considering selling the Hawks.. I've had lots of fun with them.. and love them for the thin wood cutting... I just don't do much work with thin wood.. LOL... Probably keep the newer one for a while longer.. Imagine the Hegner cuts much like the Hawk does since they have similar arm design etc.. Love to try the new Jet with that new designed upper clamp.. that just seems like it would be the best saw for fretwork and a bottom feeder like me, LOL

I have the new jet saw, and going to upgrade the clamps, will let you know what I think after the upgrade, I am very happy with the saw now, just don’t like the clamp deal, Rj

You don't like the lower clamp? or the upper one?

My understanding as if you buy the upgrade ( pegas anyway ) that you have to change both upper and lower.. then you loose the clamp and tension in one lever feature.. which is what attracts me to that saw.. otherwise it seems like just another Excalibur type saw.. which is fine and a great saw.. I just like that upper clamp design for doing lots of fretwork seems like it would be a nice feature..

On a side note.. I've looked for a replacement jet upper clamp to see if one could modify it to work on a DeWalt or Ex type saw.. but I'm thinking probably not if they say both clamps have to be changed with the Pegas upgrade..
