new2woodwrk
Question: If you paint your projects, do you paint them before or after you apply some type of finish/coating? I've been using pre-stain before staining projects and it helps keep the stain even through out the work. Not sure how/when you paint projects though and what type of paint do you use - Acrylic Model paint? Thanks in advance OCtoolguy
justdraftn
The sun/moon was my first scroll saw project that I painted. It was painted after. I use spray paint. It takes some time because it has to be taped off to paint the different colors. If it's going to be a saved project, I would spray a clear coat sealer after all the painting is done. WayneMahler
I don't paint a lot of my work. The few pieces I do I use a water based craft paint. Seal the project first to prevent raising the fibers. new2woodwrk, jollyred and OCtoolguy 2
fredfret
I paint mdf projects by sealer or primer first then paint spray or craft paint. I very rarely paint real wood. Fredfret OCtoolguy and new2woodwrk 1
MrsN
When painting I usually do a quick coat of something clear. I use the same acrylic top coat that I use for the finish, but you could use the pre-stain stuff. The first coat seals the grain a bit and make the pain go on a bit smoother. I use acrylic craft paint. I typically use this stuff from Michael's, but there are other similar brands at all the craft stores and even walmart. oldhudson
When I paint i like to apply a coat of white tinted shellac, followed by rattle can paint or brushed acrylic, and I may or may not add a top coat of lacquer. Here's a painted game. Tinted shellac is a great primer for painting. This does have a lacquer top coat. I posted this last year but made another for a non-profit I do volunteer work for. In this version I scrolled the name at the top of the box. danny, OCtoolguy, WayneMahler and 1 other 3
