My first shop area was in the carport behind me in the picture with me and my youngest daughter Bella shoveling the 12 tons of rocks I hauled to the back yard in a wheel barrow. When my neighbor put a day sleeper sign in the window above the silver Honda also seen in that picture I decided it was time to build a shop. Also seen in the pics are my older daughter Ryan helping out with the compactor, my son Chris helping me with the trusses, and my nephew Kirby helping out on the siding. And finally the inside of my completed happy place. The Pop's Shop string art sign was made by my daughter Ryan and my first grandson Ryder. I'm blessed with a wonderful family!!!

Thanks for sharing....

You both seem to have that Rigid spindle/belt sander - how do you guys like that thing? I've been considering purchasing that as it seems like a real space saver!

I love mine, though I've never had another so I don't know how it compares to others. The motor burnt out when it was around 3 years old but I had registered it for the lifetime warranty and got it repaired free. I don't treat it quite as rough now and keep it blown out more often.

The rigid sander works great. The woodworking club I belong to has one and it is used all the time and has held up well.

I'm going to attempt to post a PDF file that contains a tour of my woodworking shed that I made about ten years ago.  If that works, I will then post some new photos showing the changes that I have made.

I designed and built the stand-alone building myself and it was my first retirement project.

Good!  That worked.

I have made a few changes in the 10 years  since the time of the shop tour that I included in the previous post.  The major changes are listed below:

(1) When I started doing a LOT more scroll sawing about 2.5 years ago, I moved the my scroll saw out of the shed and down to the area of our basement where my tools used to reside:

                        

 (2)  In 2012, I replaced the Delta Planer and the Delta Jointer with a Hammer A3 Combo Jointer/Planer.  This was a tremendous improvement!  Not only did I save space but the machine is a dream to use.

(3) Last year, I replaced my router table with a Hammer F3 Shaper.  The shaper weighs about 800 pounds, so it was quite a task get the shaper around the house, through the garden, and up a ramp into my woodworking shed.  I'm happy the say that I can always call upon good friends and good neighbours to help me with tasks like this.  He are a couple of photos of the move:

   

 

(4) About a year and a half ago, I added an overhead guard and dust control to my General 650 table saw:

It does help when I remove the shade. The crankshaft is from a an early  Bell helicopter, Lycoming engine possibly a 580, I've had it since about 1970.

I also have the Rigid spindle/belt sander and I highly recommend it.

My shop is a 12 by 24 building. I have my late father in laws table saw which might ba as old as me with my jointer on top of it.

My new Rikon band saw. I haven't had a chance to do much with it yet.

My v-nailer for making picture frames.

My DeWalt scroll saw.

My Rikon VS lathe. The red box is the vacuum generator for the vacuum chuck. It works great and makes no noise.

Some extra storage. I used to have a workbench there but needed the storage more than a bench.

I keep my clamps on the bottom of the loft.

My oscillating sander and drill press.

My old Jet lathe. I use it mostly for buffing now.

My new sliding miter saw. I sold my old miter saw and radial arm saw to buy it.

More storage. In the back over the Jet, Rigid and drill press I keep all of my picture frame stock.

Last but not least is my welder.

Nothing fancy, just a 13' X 15' room.  I do all the major sawing and planeing in the garage.  Picture one is from the door showing the sanding and drilling area.  Second one shows cutting and layout area.  Third picture shows wood burning and clutter area

Now that is one cute LITTLE shop. Looks like you put in lot's of sweat equity!

Thank you! It's 16' x 20' so it can be tight at times but I love it, and I can heat it with a 3 brick infra-red heater just fine. And yes, lots of sweat equity. I did everything except pouring the slab. Thank goodness for construction tutorials on YouTube!

Thanks.  A friend's parents were throwing it out when I was 17 and asked if I could get a truck.  Had it ever since and it has been great for scrolling.  Still lifts up and down and reclines, but is set for comfort at the saw.  The reason you don't see too many is because they are heavy as everything  Took me three moves to figure out that is could be taken apart into two pieces.

Not fancy or anything, its half of the garage (the other half has become our pantry/storeroom).  But its mine, and its where I turn perfectly good pieces of lumber into sawdust, mis-cuts, and foul language.

 

My half of the garage:

 

Needed some extra space, so I slapped together some extra shelving from some recycled pallets.  Hard to see from this pic, but there's a Y2K Jack-n-the-Box antenna ball on the end of the radio antenna.  Jack's been with me through a lot, so he stays, despite what my wife says.

 

Need to clean up the scraps there at the end of the bench.  Fan is set up to blow dust off the scrollwork, I moved the scroll saw out of the way but didn't put up the fan.  No biggie, I'm about to go start some sawdust again tonight.

 

Anyone need some weathered fence slats?

Last fall I was going to have a detached garage built and move my shop into it. Well, that didn't happen. HOA had a problem with the door location and any other location would have been unworkable. So, I decided to cleanup and organize the shop I had in my 3 car garage. When we first moved into this house I installed the 4' LED ceiling lights and they made a huge difference. I had a electrician friend install a 30 amp line for my table saw and shopvac. Before, the CB would pop every time both were running. I also added the overhead reeled power cords. Last week I had the garage door folks mount lighted upper panels for even more light. All my tools are on wheeled carts and can be quickly moved to either side to get 2 cars in. Most of the time the cars are outside except when hail is predicted. Somewhat common in SC. I have posted 3 of the carts I built based on the Crestron wood plan., the latest being the router cart. I may eventually spray paint them. All the melamine cabinets are from Lowes and store hardware, small tools and consumables.  The ones under the windows I built  myself and the compressor is stored under one. I found a plan on Pinterest for the wood storage bin. I have a crosscut sled mounted on the side of my table saw and I just finished a miter sled. My wife wants me to make picture frames for her paintings.

Things are looking pretty neat right now but when I'm involved in a project, I can look like a tool explosion with stuff all over the shop.

Got to love HOA's not. I am glad l don't have one telling me what I can do. My only restriction from the city was my detached garage could not go over 1000sqft. Mine is 990sqft only because I couldn't work in the other 10sqft. My roof has a 10/12 pitch with a dormer there is a one bedroom apartment upstairs for guests.
