JustLarry
I have been using my 40-690 (the 788 clone) with the tight arm since I received it 5 years ago. It it gets loose, I tighten the pivot bolt a tad. Larry OCtoolguy
WayneMahler
I don't have the DeWalt. But most people use a block of wood to prop the arm up. It doesn't hurt the saw just an Inconvenience. OCtoolguy
NC Scroller
You can tighten the pivot screw with out damage to the saw. Tighten 1/4 turn, try it, repeat until feels the way you want. Just know that if it stays up on its own it is too tight. kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy 1
Scrappile
The accessories for sale to hold the are up are around $25. Much cheaper than a new saw..... Just saying, why take a chance. I had a "Jim Dandy" in mine worked great, there are a couple others to choose from, also. OCtoolguy

I used the Jim Dandy easy lift.. It's only $22 http://www.jimdandy.com/products.html OCtoolguy
OCtoolguy
Count me in for the Jim Dandy. Works great. Ray
Bill WIlson
Another vote for the Jim Dandy. I had one on my Dewalt for many years. Started out using a block of wood. Very quickly grew tired of that and ordered the Jim Dandy. Worth every nickel. OCtoolguy
Southern Scroller
I've had the Jim Dandy EZ lift for years on my Type 1 788. It's the best thing going and still at a reasonable price. OCtoolguy
ScollSaw Slasher
Has anyone used the Jim Dandy on the Delta 40-690 clone? Currently using the 2x4 trick rather than the locking pin in back. OCtoolguy
Bill WIlson
I have not used the Jim Dandy on the Delta 40-690, but I suspect that it would work, since the saws are so similar. There is another product on the market, called "The Lifter" which is advertised as working for both saws. I'm not endorsing the Lifter. Other than seeing an ad on Amazon, I know nothing else about it. OCtoolguy
Roberta Moreton
I had some sort of lifter on my 788 too. OCtoolguy
Woodmaster1
I have the delta 40-694 and it has a built in lifter. It works great once you get into the groove. I am sure anything that works on the 788 will work on the 40-690 delta. They the same except the color. Delta is grey and dewalt is yellow. Currently using the 2x4 trick rather than the locking pin in back. Isn't the locking pin spring loaded? ie automatically lock once the arm is at the height where it will lock? If so then I would think the easy lift would be a nuisance.. But if it's not spring loaded and you have to push it in to lock and then pull it to unlock.. the easy lift would make that process much more hassle free.. I wish the EX- saws had some sort of spring loaded arm.. while not a huge deal.. but after using the easy lift on my 788.. and my Hawks have a spring loaded upper arm that automatically goes up once the blade is unhooked makes for a extra couple steps on the EX type saws.. While I'm getting used to the EX now it's not such a nuisance as it was at first.. I'd say the Hawks have the best set up for blade changing for fret work.. for the saws I've used so far.. ScollSaw Slasher
Sorry gang, I meant the 40-694 Delta. It's a pain to reach for the locking pin to use it. That's why I use the 2x4 trick. A lot quicker and less reaching. OCtoolguy
Woodmaster1
The lock on the 40-694 is spring loaded for the release you need to push it in to lock. I have long arms and once you get in the groove it is easy. Edited April 18, 2018 by Woodmaster1 OCtoolguy
ScollSaw Slasher
Got short arms and it just works out quicker to raise with the left and stuff the 2/4 with the right. Ahhh!!!! Different strokes. Have a good one. OCtoolguy
rdatelle
I use the lifter on my 788. Works great. No more putting a block of wood under the arm. OCtoolguy
