whitehorse
Hi from Cape Town, As strange as it may sound we do not have a inexpensive range of water based primer available in South Africa. I would like to have opinions on just using quality pva paint to prime my mdf before spraying. I have had to turn to pva to save money and must say it works well as far as i can tell ( most likely answering his own question). I work quickly and cannot wait for the length of time oil based wood primers take to dry. Does plaster primer work as claimed on the interweb? blights69
I use PVA to seal any MDF work I do I also water it down first so it goes on easier and thinner and dries flatter I find by watering it down you have kind of answered your own question :0 but thought I would let you know I also use it . whitehorse and OCtoolguy
SCROLLSAW703
I ain't able to speak on that one, but, from my experience with mdf, it's pointless to put oil based anything on it. You'll be waitin' fer a month a Sundays for it to dry, if it dries, & it doesn't improve the look of mdf anyway. Just my 2 pennies worth. oldhudson
Why the need for water based? I read South Africa was in the worst of droughts in 100 years and a solvent based primer would eliminate the need to use water to clean-up. Anyway I use tinted shellac. It seal and primes. Dries in about 20 minutes. It does require and very light sanding. This game was part pw and part mdf.
