Popular Post GPscroller
A few months ago our local Windsor Plywood did a custom job out of two inch aromatic cedar. The scraps ended up in the bargain bin for $3.00/lb, too good a deal to pass up. Played chess when I was younger and had always liked the pattern for chess pieces that Sue Mey has. So decided to give it a whirl. Got some cut and showed them to a friend and he ordered a set out of walnut and aspen. Finished his and then did my light players out of some more of my scrap material (really nice grain soft wood). The first pic is of Kings and Queens of each kind of wood. Walnut on the left, then aspen, aromatic red cedar and then the mystery wood. The second pic is of my friend's set with a display case I threw together for his birthday this month. Third pic is of some the cedar pieces to show the colouring I love. wombatie
Excellent pick up on the wood Jeff. The mystery wood looks terrific. You did a beautiful set for your friend, well done. Marg GPscroller

RabidAlien
Not much of a chess player, myself (always wondered were the trebuchets and main battle tanks were...why close with the enemy when you can pick them off from a distance without putting down your cup o' coffee?)....but I've always appreciated the craftsmanship that goes into a nice chess set. Been thinking about making one of my own, now that I've pretty much finished up my current obsessi....er...project. Well done! Scrappile
That is a great chess set. You have really done a proud job. Like you I am not much of a player, but I love chess sets. I have been collecting patterns for a long time, maybe someday I will actually cut one! Larry B
Jeff, Nice job. In the end how thick were the pieces when you cut them? I started a thread here a week back when trying to cut some word art from 1.25" maple and found my Dewalt 788 blade was way out of square at the top of the stroke (but square at the bottom) after install the Pegas blade clamps. I'm curious what saw you used and how much out of square your blade is from top to bottom of stroke. Thanks Larry

I'm curious what saw you used and how much out of square your blade is from top to bottom of stroke. Thanks Larry I used my 21" Excalibur and Sawbird #3 ultra reverse blades. The wood was 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 blocks. I remember your thread about your cutting coning out. I tried larger blades to cut the blocks but found the #3's worked the best, just had to change them frequently. One blade per piece was the average for the harder woods. This kept the vertical cuts fairly straight. Hope this helps. Jeff

WayneG
that is fabulous! I would not have thought aromatic western red cedar would work well for this but you proved that was wrong. GPscroller

Frank Pellow
They look very good! Like you, I particularly like the colour of the aromatic cedar. I have some scraps somewhere of that stuff and will check to see if any of my scraps have similar colour patterns. GPscroller
