WayneMahler
Tom I had this issue with a different brand of saw. I had to replace the speed control. Your best bet would be to contact Ray at Seyco. His phone number is 1-800-462-3353. He can direct you in the right direction and knows these saws inside out. Great guy to deal with too. tomsteve and OCtoolguy 1
kmmcrafts
I'm not too up on electronics and motors etc.. but thought maybe you should check the motor brushes... I'm pretty sure these do not have the normal potentiometer like my Hawk has.. I think it's probably had the micro chip deal and the little circuit board.. to control the speed.. This is doing about the same thing as my jointer is doing and in my case it's the circuit board.. and of coarse no longer available from Delta... that said I crossed the part number and found that the Porter Cable took the same one and is still available through them.. just not sure $150 would be better spent for a upgraded jointer for me in my case.. Anyhow, I hope yours is just some brushes or maybe more simple like dust getting into the thing.. Sorry I have no solid advice.. but do check the motor brushes first.. OCtoolguy
I'm not sure of this but maybe a good cleaning of the controller with some electronic cleaner spray. If that is possible. I haven't gotten deep enough into my EX to know if that would be possible. I do recommend a call to Ray at Seyco though. tomsteve
tomsteve
thanks, all. kevin, i happened to pull the brushes after typing this. the brushes have a lot of wear left on them. ray, i used some CRc electric control cleaning spray on the ponteniometer control thingy( that is what its called on my schematic. ) with no luck. looks like a call to ray in the AM. i was out scrolling a bit and the speed will stay put once it finds its speed. touch the speed control and it goes bonkers- hunts for a bit then finds the speed and settles in. i wonder if anyone ever had any luck with the lifetime warranty on these saws..................................... kmmcrafts
Well Ray is probably the best option.. just thinking though.. if it is a potentiometer and you are able to solder the two wires on.. the part for my Hawk was a whopping $4 with free shipping off ebay..LOL... Hawk wanted to sell me the whole switch assembly for about $150 ... I know... not the same saw.. but those potentiometers are pretty universal.. I think.. and you can't really wire them wrong.. if it's wired backwards.. the switch just works backwards.. High is low and low is high, LOL.. Don't ask how I know that.. With the knowledge that a new one is on the way, I'd be tearing into the old one to see what makes it tick. You might just be able to see. I'll still bet that it's gotten either dusty or corroded or both. But, that's just me. When I was 4 years old, there wasn't a wall outlet cover in the house that had both screws in it. I took everything apart that was within my reach. tomsteve
tomsteve
i have some dust to make and as long as the speed settles down after hunting a bit im good until the replacement get here. if i get this work done before the replacement comes in ill definately tear into it and take a look. kmmcrafts
Hey that's great! glad you got it straightened out.. was worried about you burning up the circuit board or motor running it the way is was.. as that erratic speed jumping around like that can burn things up... Don't ask how I know that OCtoolguy and tomsteve 1
OCtoolguy
I just came across this thread again because of a link back to it. I'd be interested in knowing how much of a job it was to install the new control that you bought. Was it an easy fix? Just for future info. I like to know in advance what is entailed in the repair.
