a little scrollwork in this one,too

i was asked if i could build a "basic blanket chest" with the only real requirement being how the top looked. i dont do "basic" very good. all native michigan woods in this- walnut,hickory,and maple for the top. birch for the frame, contre' plaque panels( thats actually french for plywood but plywood isnt elegant enough. and didnt come from michigan but close enough- it was bought in michigan), and cedar lined.

along with the letters, i had to use the scrollsaw to do the radius on the bottom of the rails. 

this has been one of my favorite pieces to build over the years and honored to have been asked to build it.

on a side note, if anyone happens to have to ship something large like this, look into greyhound shipping. commerce twp,mi to norfolk,virginia ranges anywhere from $90 to $200- depending on whether station to station,station to door, door to station, or door to door. not bad for something this size.

Beautiful.  I am curious, you said how the top looked was dictated and I am just curious as to "why" they wanted the top done like that (if you even know.)

apparently there is a show called "scandal" the customer follows. not sure what the show is about, but theres stuff going on around a conference table often. she loves the table and wanted something to look like it. i did some digging and found out the woods used in the table were ebony,butternut,and walnut which would have made a very pricey chest top, let alone for a movie prop. so since the customer is a michigan native i decided to use locally grown woods in this. cut the cost way down,too!
