amazingkevin
my new craftsman scroll saw 18" has less than 5 hours on it and allready it on it's way out . As usual the top arm connecting link arm is wearing out fast, i've had this problem with ever chinese scroll saw i've had ,but this one wore out the fastest.I drilled 2 holes so i could see the link arm connections and sprayed lube on them . The herundous squeek stopped but not for long .What it needs is an automatic oiler for now .Does anybody have any suggestions.Thats a real shame that they turn out this stuff knowing full well that this is the first thing to go bad. amazingkevin
Sounds about right Paully,Who would think a tool could be used only on weekends by weekend warriors! lol.But 5 hours only and it's getting loose as a goose.it was tight as a drum .You can lift up on the top arm ,up and down and feel the slack getting more and more. When it gets to the point that my dremil did ,i'll drill out and press in a roll pin .these pivot points on the connecting link are so small that when a little wear is incured it acts like a knife being so small and does irreplaceable damage with every stroke.Thaks for the heads up .I have a guy in the next county interested in my telescope. A MEADE 10" reflector. If he buys it i'll send to grizzley post haste and try my hand on the dw788 .I heard that delta has the same machine for less and is green or gray instead of yellow .Does anybody know anything about this? Vector01
That really stinks Can you remove the case to get to the innards? Maybe you can apply something a bit more heavy like bearing grease. The Delta 40-690 Is a spitten image of the DeWalt 788. There's a rumor that DeWalt will discontinue the 788 saw. Same story as the Hitachi now Porter Cable. Just a different name on the same product. Oh well...Hard to tell the players without a score card Holidays are coming there will be some sales coming on these saws.
WigWag Workshop
Bummer deal! You recommended Grizzly to me, and they have been great! I been happy with my Dewalt, but looking at the Delta, it does look like the same saw. Sorry about your luck with your saws. What is the price difference between the Delta and Dewalt? medic_149
Kevin, I have a craftsman 16 inch variable speed from sears. I have had it for 3 years now and no porblems. The only thing that wore out was the rubber cushion thing under the tension knob. But it works great. Hope you get a better saw soon. If not let me know and I can ship ya some saw dust to play with. hehehehe . j/k
amazingkevin
This ones an 18" and i had to drill out a chunk of cast iron so my hand would fit to change the bottom blade. There's another chunk of metal i threw away before i thought about posting this. Send me down a truck load of that dust !
jjammo1
I read an article recently. The Delta 40-690 is the new DW788 except is comes automatically with the light and stand at a better price. They are both under the same company now so producing the dw788 is just a matter of time. I'm going for the new Delta when my current Craftsman bites it like the last one. The first lasted about 3 years with alot of use, thats why I bought another one. The tensioner wore out on mine. Mine is the 18" also. I like it and it has done great for me for about $220.
