Help with Inkscape

Recommended Posts

Well here goes, another Inkscape question.  Does an image have to be a PDF to be able to work on it in Inkscape? My niece asked me to cut a piece for her daughter who is a swimmer in high school sports.  She sent me the image, but it needs some work to be useful for me.  I got as far as importing it into Inkscape, but couldn't get the program to outline the image, I looked in the university section but honestly did not read the complete package.  I am going to attempt to attach the file here so you can see what I'm trying to do, if someone knows the wat a complete computer idiot can do this I would appreciate the help.  Thank you in advance.

Why do you want to outline it? I would print it the way that it is and attach it to the wood with a removable glue.  Then I would cut it the way that it is, keeping the blade in the white and right next to the black all the way around. For the inside areas you need a small hole in each to thread the blade through, cut it out, and then move to the next hole.  I fail to see your need for a line. All of the white part is waste, so it doesn't matter if it gets cut up. Maybe I don't understand your question, but it seems simple to me. I don't think you need Inkscape at all, unless it needs to be resized, and even then I wouldn't use Inkscape.

Import this JPEG, then trace bitmap. Then you can do whatever you want to it. Let me know if you need anything else.

I just did as you suggested Dave and it works like a charm. Very easy to make any adjustments to the drawing. I think I might get to where I understand Inkscape yet.

CharleyL, thank you for the information but I don't need help with scrolling, I am attempting to learn Inkscape.

Dave, thank you for your help.  I imported the image just as you said, but I didn't have any luck with it.  I couldn't spend a lot of time on it this morning because I had an appointment, but I will try again later.

I think the tricky part is the "path--trace bitmap" thing. I did it on another pattern and didn't see that anything was happening. Then I found out that the new pattern is on top of the old pattern. Once I found that to be the case, I was able to move the new pattern off to the left and then move the original off to the right. I was then able to click on the new pattern and click on the "edit path nodes" icon and they all showed up. From that point on, it's just a matter of figuring out what to do next. Lots to learn.

Hi Ray, If you import your image into inkscape then you can trace -bit map, Click on "path" then "trace-bit map", Then with your item selected click on "update" it will show how it might look if you scaned it, See how you go Ray,

Bob.

Thanks Bob but where is "update" on the menu? I can't seem to locate it.

Dave, question, is there a way to do a "trace-bit map" and then delete all the nodes. The pattern I am trying to work with has about a zillion nodes around it and it would be nice to eliminate all of them and create my own. Can you advise?

With the node tool clicked I click on the nodes that I don't want and hit my delete key. If their are several, I drag hold down my left mouse button and drag a box around them and they will be highlighted and then hit delete.

Thanks Dave. I wonder if you were to click/drag around the entire drawing if it would delete them all. I'll have to try that. I'm starting to get the hang of this program but it is still very baffling. I'd sure love to have an expert sitting beside me for a couple of hours. Any takers?

Hi Ray, If you click on "path" then select "trace-bit map" on the pop up window bottem right corner you will see "update" O.K.

Bob

Ok, I saw that but I thought it was to update the drawing being bit mapped. When I open that window, it always displays the last thing that I did so I hit the update key. I'll have to try what you suggested. The one I am working on right now has so many nodes all crammed in around the lines that I thought it might be nice to just draw a box around them and hit the delete key but so far it hasn't worked.

Hi Ray, Each time you alter your scan of the image you have imported-hit the "update" to see what it will look like, O.K.

Bob,

P.S. If you want you can send Me the image you with all the nodes on and I will see what I can do!

Thanks Bob, but that won't help me learn Inkscape. Right now, I have the drawing open, bit mapped and zoomed to 200%. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to delete the nodes within a "boxed" area. I want to get rid of them and do a node trace of my own with far fewer nodes. I hope I'm making myself clear.

One thing to try to get rid of some of the nodes is to "simplify" the paths, under the path commands.  If you delete all of the nodes, there will be no lines left!  It may be that after simplifying the path, the drawing will change to something you don't want, especially if you simplify several times.  If that happens, just "undo" back to the last "good" drawing.  The "undo" command is one of my favorites.

That definitely works and I see what you mean by oversimplifying. You start to lose some of the detail.

All settled in and got forms set to pour concrete for my new shop. Hopefully it will dry up soon. If you get up my way look me up.

I just looked to see where Justin is. I see it's a small town but you have an Ace Hdwe. Store. Are you close to it? I also see Rabbit Hole Brewing Co. The place to be would be right in between them.
