Hudson River Rick Posted October 15, 2018 Report Share Posted October 15, 2018 Well here goes, another Inkscape question. Does an image have to be a PDF to be able to work on it in Inkscape? My niece asked me to cut a piece for her daughter who is a swimmer in high school sports. She sent me the image, but it needs some work to be useful for me. I got as far as importing it into Inkscape, but couldn't get the program to outline the image, I looked in the university section but honestly did not read the complete package. I am going to attempt to attach the file here so you can see what I'm trying to do, if someone knows the wat a complete computer idiot can do this I would appreciate the help. Thank you in advance. CharleyL Posted October 16, 2018 Report Share Posted October 16, 2018 (edited) Why do you want to outline it? I would print it the way that it is and attach it to the wood with a removable glue. Then I would cut it the way that it is, keeping the blade in the white and right next to the black all the way around. For the inside areas you need a small hole in each to thread the blade through, cut it out, and then move to the next hole. I fail to see your need for a line. All of the white part is waste, so it doesn't matter if it gets cut up. Maybe I don't understand your question, but it seems simple to me. I don't think you need Inkscape at all, unless it needs to be resized, and even then I wouldn't use Inkscape. I couldn't spend a lot of time on it this morning because I had an appointment, but I will try again later. I think the tricky part is the "path--trace bitmap" thing. I did it on another pattern and didn't see that anything was happening. Then I found out that the new pattern is on top of the old pattern. Once I found that to be the case, I was able to move the new pattern off to the left and then move the original off to the right. I was then able to click on the new pattern and click on the "edit path nodes" icon and they all showed up. From that point on, it's just a matter of figuring out what to do next. Lots to learn. The pattern I am trying to work with has about a zillion nodes around it and it would be nice to eliminate all of them and create my own. Can you advise? With the node tool clicked I click on the nodes that I don't want and hit my delete key. If their are several, I drag hold down my left mouse button and drag a box around them and they will be highlighted and then hit delete. Bob Ok, I saw that but I thought it was to update the drawing being bit mapped. When I open that window, it always displays the last thing that I did so I hit the update key. I'll have to try what you suggested. The one I am working on right now has so many nodes all crammed in around the lines that I thought it might be nice to just draw a box around them and hit the delete key but so far it hasn't worked. bobscroll 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Right now, I have the drawing open, bit mapped and zoomed to 200%. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to delete the nodes within a "boxed" area. If you delete all of the nodes, there will be no lines left! It may be that after simplifying the path, the drawing will change to something you don't want, especially if you simplify several times.
