A few updates to the workshop

Well hopefully what I got accomplished today will help clear up the air in the garage. Made up two dust collectors, one for each of the scroll saws and hung a air filtration system. Hopefully these will help reduce some of the saw dust in there.

 

Oh yeah, I also went and bought a larger shop vac. This one has 170's cfm's compared to the one before that only had 60 cfm's.

I sure do envy you all that space. Nice job on the dust control systems.

Thanks Les and Ray, I'm hoping it will be better in the shop in the near future. I had went all summer with no shop vac and didn't realize how bad it was in there till I had replaced the filter on my respirator one afternoon and worked in the shop for about 4-5 hours and when I took off the respirator there was brown dust caked on the inside. That was the time I decided I had to do something while I was still able to.

I will let everyone know how it works. I will be going into the shop pretty soon and work some.

Where are you guys buying the large blue flex hose stuff from? I am planing to buy a higher end vacuum around the holidays and really wanting to set up this type of dust collection on all my saws.. so I can just move the hose from one saw to the next.. though now days I'm pretty much only using the Hawks and Excalibur.. and liking the Excalibur more and more now that I put those Pegas chucks on it..

at the time I was able to get the cheapest that way, but you can get it through Amazon and other places...

Nice set up Jim.  I think you will be very happy with it.

Hey Kevin, I bought mine off Amazon.  Loc Line

I ordered two more pieces of the line so I can extend the upper pieces.

I am very happy with the set up so far. It is nice to be able to walk into the shop and not walk into a haze like before.

I just wanted to add, I purchased their pliers for that the size of line I purchased... To me the pliers are way over priced, but I knew I was going to do quite a bit of assembling and experimenting when I put mine together and I thought it would make it easier.   It did, and I am not sorry I purchased them.  They are pretty flimsy, and again, to me, over priced,, but they work and do make things somewhat easier...

I purchased the pliers on Amazon for around $10 or so. Lock-Line is very expensive.

Okay, so I did some experimenting today while cutting some ornaments... I just zip tied my 2.5" vac hose to my blade holder tray thing on my Hawk on the left side of it.. I then hooked up the vac to the foot switch and cut out a stack of 4 ornaments... It got about 95% of the dust.. and I didn't have the hose up close to the blade at all as I was trying to get it to be at the edge of the saw table so it might get the dust blown over to that side from the saws dust blower.. but that ended up ( most of it anyway ) blowing past the opening and landing on top of the hose back about 4 -5 inch past the hose end.. I'm thinking one doesn't need to go o such a small hose that is going to create so much more noise... I am thinking about just running a open hose with a T and a elbow.. the one opening would go to the underside near the blade.. the other end would come up to about the table height to hopefully get the dust on the top side that is blown over to the side by the blower... I may have to do a flex hose for the top to get closer to the blade and just not use the saws dust blower.. either way.. just thought I'd share the info about how just having the vac hose off to the side picked up much of the dust..  Maybe I'll have to buy some of the smaller flex hose to get the best possible collection.. but I really o not want to add to the noise level by going down to such a small hose..

That has been my experience. A reduced diameter hinders air-flow. I use a 2.5" flex hose from my DC.

What size of the loc line are you using?

Things come and go on Amazon because they don't actually have that much in stock and depend on outside suppliers to furnish and ship the merchandise. That's why sometimes the ad will say how many is left.

I'm seriously thinking about using the 2 1/2" LocLine kit on my EX vac installation. The Fein hose is smaller than that though so some adapting will be required. I'm hoping it will still clean up the dust but with reduced noise. I hate to spend the $50 on a failed experiment but I will hope for the best.

Does your Fein have a variable speed? I talked with the Festool Rep during a demo of their vac.. and it had a variable speed or quiet mode so to speak.. and the vac was quieter on the low setting.. which still had quite a lot of suction.. I often wondered how much that would affect the noise with the 3/4" piping.. I'm planning to purchase a vac soon.. and I see some of the Fein vacs have the lower speed as well.. just wondered if yours does and if it helps to reduce the noise..
