Tomanydogs
Could someone tell me the difference between the two for taping the board before scrolling Thanks Irene OCtoolguy
JTTHECLOCKMAN
depending on company they will have a tact rating on the side of the wraper when you buy it. Blue is med range and green is light range. Less tact with green as opposed to blue. Purple is another low tact tape color. Some cheap companies just color the tape and means nothing. 3M is good along with Frog tape Never use plain tan masking tape. You will have a real hard time getting that off. The longer you leave tape on the harder to remove. Some people use heat to remove easier and some will soak in MS. I have no problem with blue. If I have a real delicate project I will use purple or green. Those are my thoughts on the subject. Please read my second post to explain a little more about how no two tapes are equal. So be aware of this and do not make a blanket statement. Sorry if there is any confusion. Read the labels to be sure. JTTHECLOCKMAN
I better make this more clear here. Not all brands of tape are the same. Frog green tape is more stickier than blue and is used for lacquers and things like that so you can not make a blanket statement about which is which. Scotch too has a green tape that is high on the adhesive chart. Do not want to use automotive colored tape because that too is high strength. My point here is again not all tapes are equal and it is best to read the labels when buying tape. If you do not know what you have go to the store and find your roll and read the label. No need to buy. Maybe mark on inside of core. OCtoolguy
Tomanydogs
I went to the store today. I did not see any tact rating on the blue or the green. The guy in the store said you can leave blue on longer and it will still come off nicely, the green when left on too long is harder to get off.?? Not sure if he is correct or not. I use both blue and green painters tape, they both work okay for me. Green is less expensive Thanks, I appreciate the explanation. Hermit
Best to read the labels on the tape. It should tell you how many days you have to get the tape off cleanly. Most are either 7 or 14 days. The green tape works best for dirtier surfaces and will be more sticky. If I'm masking on concrete or stucco I use the green tape from the paint store that says right on it "for brick or concrete". My local box store doesn't carry this type tape. I wouldn't recommend it for wood projects. Even the blue tape has different purposes. Some blue tape is used for smooth surfaces and others are used for uneven surfaces. I'll add to the pot and just say read the label and you'll be fine. OCtoolguy
NC Scroller
Be careful with any brand, type, color painters tape on plywood. Even the clear shelf paper. They all remove fibers when you peel it off. OCtoolguy
Sycamore67
I looked at the Frog Tape and 3m websites and they are consistent. Blue has the greatest holding power followed by Green, then Yellow. The recommended max time for leaving it on is the reverse with Yellow being the longest followed by Green then Blue. There is so many brands out there and the color system is not industry wide consistent and that is why I caution you to read the label and go from there. Scotch was the original blue painters tape and probably the one most people are familar seeing but even labels of companies try to mimic the original to trick you into buying. fredfret
I use scotch blue painters tape and with the exception of some fiber damage ( both with short and long term attachment) I have had no problems removing it when keeping the project in a climate controlled location. I had a project that had to take a long break due to work and other things ( think 6 years) when finished the tape came off fine. I did a project for a friend that needed to be done outside (dust) left it in the shop (90 deg) for 3 days with the tape and pattern on. After a day of heating, mineral spirits and sanding I managed to get all the tape off. Make sure you keep the environment in mind. Frank Pellow
I thank everyone who has contributed to my knowledge in this thread. My biggest take-away is that I would be wise to stick to what I know and the masking tapes that I know and trust for various jobs are: 3M tan, 3M green, and 3M blue. In my cupboard I have Green Painters Mate and my blue is called ipg Pro Mask Blue. I just bought a inexpensive two pack one green roll and one blue roll. But no tact rating on the packaging for any of them.
JTTHECLOCKMAN
Green Painters Mate (medium to high adhesion rate) http://www.paintersmategreen.com Pro mask blue (medium adhesion rate up to 14 days) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Intertape-Polymer-Group-PT14-Pro-Mask-Blue-1-in-x-60-yds-Masking-Tape-9-Pack-PT14-24SL/202667711 Basically both these tapes are of equal value as far as adhesion and neither one is low tact. If these are the ones you have. For low tact tape and I use it on delicate projects I use Duck purple painters tape. If the tape says 30 day limit for easy release usually means low tact. That is another key way to tell differences
