I can't be without a landline. The cell service to me is still not reliable. I like putting a true receiver up to my ear.

I never did realize how many of these robo calls or whatever scam calls come through since I retired. Some days the phone constantly rings. One after another. Other days nothing so there must be a pattern day.

 

With that said another thing that has become popular in my area and want to strangle these people are the solicitors that ring the doorbell. Power companies solar companies, remodel companies, you name it they sell it. I tell the person to take me off the list and next week another guy shows up selling same thing. Now with crime the way it is these days you never know what is ringing the doorbell or on the other end they do not know what is behind that door. I have been meaning to  have a sign made no soliciting

I find answering the door with a gun in hand generally discourages those people. word does get around.

Here is the FAX answer tone on YouTube. Just play it through your computer when creating your phone answer message on your phone answering machine, then wait a couple of seconds after it ends and then add your voice answer message after it. The robots will hear the FAX tone, hang up, and remove your phone from their list.  

You do need to tell your friends and contacts not to hang up when they hear the tone, and to just wait to leave a message.

scammers  are funny in a sick way. about 8 or so years ago i picked up an "unavaliable" number. dont know why, but it was a scammer. sat there listening to him, then started MY pitch to extend the warranty on his car for only $39.95/month and that would cover more than factory warranty and rattling all kinds of stuff off.

he hung up on me!!!

I love to get those phone calls.  It makes my day sometimes.  I get them on the phone and tell them I am interested but to please hold on

for a minute. then I put them on hold and play very horrible elevator music for them to listen to. I check back every few minutes to see if they are still on the line.  You be surprised how many of them actually hang on. The older I get I find out  It's the simpler things in life that I enjoy most.

Yes for sure. And the racking of the slide on a 12 gauge pump shotgun has the same effect. It can be heard through the closed door. I love my Remington Wingmaster.

For the door to door people if my Great Dane is outside they typically stay in their car.. he is pretty aggressive as he was a rescue dog that I'm pretty sure was abused.. and if they are driving a car.. usually have to look up out the car window at him.. LOL.. most trucks he is eye level with you.. Nobody has been brave enough to get out yet until I put him in.. I also make sure that i tell the main delivery drivers not to get out if my main door to the house is open.. as he knows how to open the screen door.. One time he herd a neighbor raise his voice to me ( just saying hi ) but the dog thought otherwise.. and he took out the whole screen door to my sliding door.. Messed up bad enough I had to get a new one, LOL Real good dog once he knows whoever here is okay..

He's actually a very nice dog.. and more scared of visitors than anything.. he won't get close to them when they open the door of the car... but he is really aggressive "acting" and very big which make him intimidating.. and he doesn't even get close enough to bite someone.. just a lot of barking... But.. that said.. if he senses trouble I do believe he'd protect himself or his humans, LOL 

But yeah.. I do keep my insurance paid up.. as you never know what might happen.. not just because of the dog.. but someone slipping in the driveway in the snow and ice we get in the winter.. Also have signs all over beware of the dog.. etc etc..

There are "those" people that just look for someone to sue and some with a large intimidating dog is exactly what they are looking for. People are so sue-happy anymore that you have to have a huge liability umbrella to protect yourself. When my Dad had his fatal heart attack a couple who were "very close friends" with my folks rushed over to the house. She slipped in the entryway and broke her arm. She sued my Mother's insurance because of the tiled entryway. Needless to say, they didn't remain friends for very long.

I agree with everything you say..  and many times it's not the people that is suing.. it's the insurance companies trying to re-coop their money from a payout.. When my son was 3 years old he was playing with a toy sward and got in a office chair and was standing up getting ready to jump.. wife was cleaning and had her back to him but turned around just about the time he was getting ready to jump.. she tried to get over to him before it all happen but the chair spun on him and he lost his balance and fell.. Broke his arm.. Take him to the ER and have a whole big book of papers to fill out on that.. then several months later a letter come in the mail to fill out all kinds of stuff from the insurance company.. Chair brand model etc etc.. apparently the insurance company was trying to sue the chair maker for the money they lost.. I don't know that to be true.. but the info we had to send in sure made it sound like that..  So my point is... it's not just the individuals out there looking to sue... the insurance companies do that ALL the time now days.. it's just standard procedures for them now...

Boy are you lucky. I'm truly surprised that you didn't hear from child protective services. In today's world, parents are guilty until proven innocent.

Last time I got a call like that I asked for a return number, received it.  Then I told them I was going to pass it on to the police. They hung up immediately. Still getting the CRA electronic calls telling me I am going to be arrested!!!
