I'm very disappointed in Delta

I bought a used 14" band saw a few years back. As far as I know, it is either the same as the current model being sold or very close. It's a 28-206. I broke a part on it trying to fix a problem. A very cheaply made Taiwan aluminum casting. The part is no longer available and so far I have not found a part that will interchange. I did find a used part on eBay and had to pay an exorbitant price for it but at least I'll be able to get my saw up and running again. Why would any company worse it's salt discontinue a major part without some sort of a replacement? I will not be buying or owning any more Delta tools. I'm very disappointed in what was once a great American company. SAD!

I dont think so. Did you try Mike's tools. He has delta parts

Yes, I tried him and also eReplacement parts. I found a used one on eBay and ordered it but I'm having to pay 3 times the price of a new one when they were available. But, at least I can resurrect my saw.

Ray, what is the part number? Sometimes I find odd parts or a superseded number by searching the part number.. sometimes it takes some digging..

I do agree with you 100% about Delta.. which is why I don't deal with anything Delta made new or used.. same deal with my Delta jointer... lucky for me I was able to bypass the Variable speed... but otherwise it would just go to a landfill..

Thanks Kevin. I did a lot of research yesterday. I have feeling that the part that Grizzly uses might fit but I got in a hurry and went on eBay and found someone in Utah that has the assembly in this picture. I had to pay an exorbitant price for it but I want and need my bandsaw to operate. I might start looking for a different brand and sell mine. Maybe the Grizzly. Who knows?

Ray they change those out to a quick release lever now adays if they break. There are many Delta parts dealers on the net just have to google for what you want. 2011 Delta sold their division and was taken over by a chineses company. They moved part of the headquarters to South Carolina. have to say I have a shop full of Delta tools and of course they are older tools but I would not hesitate to buy Delta again. It is a crap shoot of who owns these companies today. People love Wen and I would not get with 2 feet of a wen product. Grizzly gets high marks but again would not touch them All Chineses made too. Good luck in your quest. If you ever need another part let me know and I will locate it or give you a little insight as to what can be done. As I said those tension knobs are an old system  that has been long replaced.

Ray,

I was going to mention the same as JT just did. Those have been changed out a long time ago. You might get lucky and get in touch with Delta themselves and figure out something to get yourself a quick release kit for your saw. Just tell them the details, and give the representative the serial number of the saw. Ya never know, sometimes they may offer ya deal ya can't refuse, Sir. It's worth the phone call, in my estimation. I sure would, anyway! It's your saw.

I have a Delta bench top jointer that my Bride bought for a Father's day gift several years ago, and it has gave excellent service, Ray. It has nothing but hardwood over it, and I have never even moved the blades! It still has the original blades in the original positions, and still doing a fine job!

My saw has the quick release lever. What I found upon disassembly was that the sliding bracket that broke was frozen in the tracks and nothing was moving even when the lever was moved. There was enough movement in the spring that I never realized that the wheel wasn't moving up or down. The spring had gone bad and that's why I was tearing it apart. I used a dead blow hammer and a block of wood to try to move the slider and it just shattered. CHEAP crap! I found an older one that wasn't like mine that I almost bought but I wasn't sure it would fit. I'm hoping this one fits. I'm going to get it working and I think I'll sell it. I'll find a saw that is like the one I bought 20 years ago. LIke I was telling Kevin, I found a great looking 28-200 Rockwell near where Iive for $350. I might be able to haggle the price down a bit. Thanks for your help JT.

Ray, I don't think you can really trust most tool brands any more.  The big companies buy them up then decide they don't really want them so they resell them to the highest bidder customers be damned!  I have several Delta woodworking tools they no longer support.  Your only hope is finding third party parts and pay up.   Good luck!

You are so right Stoney. I can't believe how this aluminum bracket just shattered. After watching a video and hearing that others have had the same problem I guess it's a common thing with these saws. If I had access to a mill, I'd make my own out billet aluminum. Not that difficult.

You could take the broken part to a machine shop and ask them to make a new one.

On a side note, if you got it used the original owner may not have maintained it properly. Yes, many parts are made cheaper and we get what we pay for, but with proper routine or preventative maintenance most machines will last a long time. Even the expensive machines need care.

You are so right Dan. I have had this saw for about 5 years and I bought it used. In all that time, I've only changed the blade a couple of times so I had no reason to do much adjustment on it. It has the "quick disconnect" lever on it so all I did was loosen it to change the blades. I never realized that the sliding bracket wasn't moving. Now, looking back, I can see why the spring was so compressed. I thought it had lost it's spring tension. That's why I was taking it apart in the first place. After I got it apart I found that one side of the sliding bracket was "fat" and wasn't moving in the groove of the frame. When I get the replacement part, I will make sure it fits correctly and apply synthetic grease to all moving parts. It should work much better after that. While I have the saw torn apart, it is giving me a chance to inspect all aspects of it and do whatever maintenance it needs. I should have done this a long time ago. I might have been able to buy a NEW part instead of having to go used. Thanks for your input Dan.
P.S. The old bracket was in so many pieces that it would have been pretty much impossible to make one at a machine shop. It literally turned to bits and pieces.

Well, here is an update. I received the used parts that I bought on eBay and tried to install them. The new bracket would only go in the grooves about a third of the way before it just stopped. So, I took a fine file and cleaned up the grooves and then I started taking some material off the sides of the bracket. I got it to where it would slide up and down in the grooves just with it's own weight. I applied some synthetic grease and reassembled everything. It now works like a charm. I readjusted all the guides and cleaned everything so there is no interference anywhere. I'm a happy camper once again.

Glad you got it all taken care of... sounds like you shouldn't never have any more issues out of this part of the saw now.

Unless something way strange goes wrong, I don't see any more problems on the horizon. I would like to get one of those segmented belts for it though. They run much smoother. But, they are pricey. That's the only reason I haven't bought one. The drive belt on my saw is pretty long so it's probably set me back around $40 or more.

They are good for taking vibration out from the motor. I have them on my bandsaw and tablesaw. Worth the investment.

Did you find a good source? I used to see them for sale at the woodworking shows but the shows are nonexistent now. At least in So Cal.

I too bought them at a woodworking show from Peachtree woodworking. Cost is not everything when it comes to having tools work well and safe. Those are abuy once and not have to ever again.
