I have noticed that many of you have 'multiple' saws.  May I ask the reason for this ?  Do different saws do different things?

I have two saws  one is a little Pin End saw that I still use, but then, when I came on here I found out about Pinless saws and the world that they could open up for me.  I have an Axminster that I love but is it 'all' I need or do I need to prise open husbands wallet again ??

However, reading some posts and seeing photo's of peoples workshops, it seems that owning 2/3/4 saws is not uncommon and I just wondered why? Just being nosy really xxx   Brenda

I think that those that sell their work have a second saw in case the first one stops working. When I buy a better saw I sell my old one.

I started with a Craftsman then had a Dremel, next was the Dewalt and now the Excalibur. Only keep one. Always sold the old one.

I only have 1 saw, but I have 7 routers.  I can't explain it either.

I have about 18 routers so do not ask why. As far as saws yes if doing a business you can not afford to be shut down for any length of time. I am on the outs of my business venture and moving on because getting to old and the show circuit is not like it is and hate doing online selling. That is a huge hassle and the Gov. is making it worse. But also I have 4 saws and all were gotten with a price you could not walk away from. But glad I did have them.

Foxfold, I'm a relative newbie to this hobby too but I got interested in the different types of saws and found that there were really only a handfull of decent manufacturers. I started out with a used Dewalt, fixed it up and like it. Then I came across a deal on a Hegner that I couldn't pass up and bought it. After messing with it, I decided that either there was something wrong with it or I just couldn't adapt to it. About the time that I had decided to sell it, a great deal came up on an Excalibur 21. So, I had to buy that too. Then, I sold the Hegner. I now have two great saws. I really only have space for one but I'll suffer through. I don't know what I'll do if a deal comes up on a Hawk that is just too good to let go by. I may end up having an outdoor saw. Anyway, that's my story and I guess now everybody knows it.

Nosy is OK. I have a friend with 11 scroll saws. He is hoping to start a teaching program. I have one saw because that is all I have room for.

Les, I thought you had more than one. Did you sell another Hawk?

I did Ray. I sold my 16 inch Hawk to my friend who has the 11. His latest purchase was two old Deltas. Q2 or 3? Not sure. He scrolls full time but I can't get him to join the Village. He is a loner.

I now have 2, and Excalibur 21 and a Hawk G4 26" that I just bought recently. I have always wanted a Hawk and the price was right. I love my Ex 21, and have not used the hawk much yet, if I don't like it when I start using it more I may sell it. But then again I doubt it, more than likely I will keep it and between the two I will have a backup saw.

Why do I have two scroll saws set up? My husband probably wonders thst too. especially since they are in “his” shop. Technically, we have 3 “ in the house.,” but only two are setup.  Actually, it’s his fault. We had the big yellow “Type 1” Dewalt. We had had it for many, many years but was little used. Then, when I got interested again and took some Intarsia classes, I  purchased a used purple Excalibur from Seyco after using one at my classes. I was happy with that saw. I liked that saw. It’s a good Saw. But, hubby struggles with what to buy me for gifts. I am not a jewelry kinda girl. My birthday is the week after Mother’s Day. The new Seyco Saw came out and was reviewed in the Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts magazine shortly before that month one year. So hubby being a good hubby, ordered me the new Seyco Saw. That moved the Dewalt out of the workshop. One reason i keep the Excalibur setup is because you can tilt it more then the Seyco. I also like having both if something happened to one even though I do not sell. The big question is what we are doing with the Type 1 Dewalt. Since it’s a “Type 1,” I hate to just get rid of it. So it is sitting in the garage while I decide what to do with it. I keep hoping somebody in the family wants to learn.

For me, I have my primary saw, but I have an emergency back-up (both DeWalt's).  I cut enough that I can't really afford to be out of commission for long, so having the back-up is a must.

As soon as I hear my primary saw begin making the telltale sounds of wearing out, I order a new one and have it at the ready.

Technically I have 4 scroll saws...

1 near dead

OH somebody HAD to mention routers....I do have a few of those.

One EX-21 I used daily.  One older Hegner Muilt-Max use once and a while.  One Hawk VS226 only use on big projects.  1.5 Dewalts collecting dust.  To explain the last I have a Type 2 on it's last legs and a Type 1 I had used over the years to keep the Type 2 working (motor shorted out on the Type 1).  I have multiple saw because I do sell some and I can't afford to be without. For the record the Dewalt Type 2 and the EX-21 were purchased new.  The others were purchased used.

i still have 3. my WEN was my first and it is now in storage. 2dn is my craftsman, i bought this for the same reason as you, for plain end spiral blades. then i ran across a deal on a hawk 226VS i could not pass up.

my wife has started scrolling now so we have both set up so we can scroll together.

Well Brenda,  I started out with a Delta Q3  which I picked up cheap on E-Bay.  I had never used a scroll saw before but thought it looked fun and the saw was cheap enough to give it a go.  The Q3 is a great saw but very aggressive cutting due to the "C" arm design and it is now getting on a bit.   I did a lot of work on it though and still have it.    Next I found a Diamond  again on E-bay for £26.  It had had a hard life in a factory but I fettled it up a bit and started to get to know it.  Unfortunately I sold it for £70 when we emigrated to NZ as we were short of space in our shipping container.  I really regret that decision. 

So I arrived in NZ with my trusty Q3 which continued to serve me well until I broke the tension lever.  Thankfully this part was still available from E-replacementparts.com for $4 plus $28 shipping.  The thought of being without a functioning saw was too horrible to contemplate so I started looking around for a backup saw.  Unfortunately good saws here are very rare.  I guess with a population of 4.5 million, not many of them are scrollers!  Eventually I stumbled across a DeWalt DW788 type1 which was a real find as they are not sold here in NZ.  I drove a 12 hour round trip to get it and enjoyed it for three months until there was a puff of smoke from the back of the saw and that was the end of that.  I still have it and will try to find someone to look at it but  I reckon its beyond economical repair here. 

So I continued on with my trusty Q3 until one day I saw a Hegner  on E-bay UK that would ship via the Global Shipping Programme....

 

It took a while to get here and import duty added considerably to the cost but I now have a saw that I can pass on to my son.  I just wish I had bought one before I left the UK.  And kept that Diamond!   My Q3 now eyes me reproachfully from the corner of the workshop.

Technically in our garage we have 3 Scroll saws, a Dewalt, a EX21 and an EX16, the 16 is my husbands.  We have 3 drill presses, 8 cordless drills and I am thinking one of everything else, except for the smaller none electric stuff.

One Dewalt (almost dead), one Seyco ST-21, and one Hegner.

The Seyco gets the most use but I am trying to get more comfortable with the Hegner.

I don't have an answer as to why I own three saws, other than I enjoy this hobby!

I feel Like a Newbie,I have 1 saw,(dying) Looking for another.I have a backup,but it to is dying almost dead,it was a gift from my Bro, who didn,t know anything about scroll saws.Hoping to buy a new one real soon.

I've had a Delta 40-560 type 2 for 25 years and now have 2, 40-560 and 2, 40-540 bought as spares but are complete and usable. I also have 2 Hobbies A1 treadles saws and 6 hand frames, so technically I have 12 saws.
