Dust mask

What does every one use for a dust/particulate mask? Or don't you?

And when do you wear the mask? cutting, sanding, etc.

I normally don't wear one but soon I will teach a class of high school and college age students in the art of scrolling and need to ultra safe.

 I try to collect dust at the source as I have an Oneida filter system throughout the shop.

The only time I wear a mask is when I am spraying lacquer and then I use a 3M brand mask with a carbon/organic canister.

Help on the dust mask would be appreciated.

I bought this mask on Amazon and these two filters. I use it whenever I am cutting but I'm going to start wearing it when sanding also. It makes a very big difference in my breathing through my nose afterward.

I use a dust be gone mask. Any dust mask is better than no dust mask.

I have been using the medical examining masks. They are fairly cheap and catch the finest of dust.

You'll get a ton of options on this subject, LOL.. almost like the what saw to buy and what blades to buy, LOL..

For what it's worth.. I bought this mask a year ago and just replaced the filters for the second time a few weeks ago..  I do occasionally take the filters out and use a air gun to blow the dust back out.. but I quit doing that.. as it didn't make sense to not have a mask on while blowing the dust out of my mask sending it all over my shop.. 

I wear it anytime I'm in the shop.. even with dust collection and everything.. there is still fine dust that settles everywhere and just moving can stir it up.. so I just always wear it..

I bought that same mask but I found that it is too small for my fat face. I have a nice new one if anybody wants it.

I've had a RZ mask for several years and really like it even though I know I don't wear it as often as I should.  It is very comfortable and seem to do a good job at filtration.  They claim to be 99.9% effective, but are not NIOSH or OSHA approved.

One small thing that I really like is that they are available in bright colors which make them easier to locate when left laying around the shop.

I primarily use the same one as Kevin has shown, even though we have an air filter in the shop, and a complete dust vac system ducted for all the tools. I try to wear it whenever I am out in the shop working at the Saw, sanding, etc. I need to remember to turn the air filter on when I first go out into the shop. I do use the vacuum system (most) of the time.

These were what I was wearing until I got the one Kevin showed above last year. It’s probably what hubby wears primarily unless he is turning, then he has the biggest face shield with air.

I also have this battery operated one from Rockler that hubby bought me. https://www.rockler.com/power-air-respirator but I haven’t really used it much yet. Be careful if you get one of these, someone I know said she got burned from the battery pack when she had it in her back pocket.

I basically wear it all the time in the shop if doing any cutting. I have an air cleaner system set up so that helps. I use a dust collector at the source for large chips. They are not efficient for dust collecting perse. Never used a vac on any scrollsaws but some people swear by them but that noise for hours would ruin my ears and then I need ear protection Like suiting up to go to space to enjoy a hobby.

My brother wears that powered one for his small guitar cab shop.. He really likes it.. but quite a chunk of change though worth it if it works good... My question is.....  Does the air that thing pump filtered or are they just sucking up all the dust you create and blowing it into your mask LOL..

At the time, the only size offered was the one I bought. I think it was a medium.

So do any of you wear glasses? How do you keep your glasses from fogging up when you’re wearing a mask? I know that you can put detergent on the lenses wipe the detergent around and that will help for awhile. 

Maybe I’m wear the mask wrong, when I wear one.

If your glasses are fogging your mask is not sealing.

I wear glasses and I have a mask with a vent that opens when I breath out, if that makes sense.

I can't wear these type because I have a narrow nose and they don't seal around my nose, and they still leak and fog my glasses.

I use a 3m half mask.

They sell two sizes.  They are sized Small/Medium and then Medium/Large.

@Octoolguy - if no one else wants to take that one off your hand, let me know (send me a pm) and we can work out a deal.  Never hurts to have a spare on hand.  I will have to check and see what size mine is.  I would assume its a Small/Medium.  What size is yours?

I have two, an old Racal full face air fed mask and a Sundstrom mask but to honest it's not very often I use either, by the time I've thought about putting one on I finished cutting.

One of the best, no fogging glasses, efficient, comfortable, inexpensive, and works with a beard...... ya looks ridicules when wearing it.... I have one of each size, the single filter for scrolling, the double when I was sanding on the lathe and using my hand power sanders.

Yep, tried that and it says
