Pegas Blades And DnD

Well these blades I got in size MFG #5 are giving me some issues.. seems about every third blade I use breaks.. I think I can use most but it's frustrating being in the Christmas rush and having to cut these to the correct length etc.. So tonight I decided I was just going to order another couple gross hoping the issue is fixed or at least inspected before being shipped to me... But.. they are now out of stock on that size..  Guess I'm stuck using these junk blades.. LOL.. The other option is.. using the couple gross of FD-UR blades I have or the gross of FD- SR or the  😂😂  Never can have too many blades in stock... I probably have enough blades if I was to sell them I could buy a new Hawk 😂😂

While I am kind of bummed that I can't order some of my favorite blades... I'm also thankful that I also like FD blades and have plenty of blades in stock that I can use.. that said.. I hope they get the issue with the Pegas straightened out and get some back in stock..

The bad batch of blade thing.... I wouldn't write off Pegas just yet.. they are awesome blades when they have the good ones..  and info for those new to the scroll saw world... in my 12 years of scroll sawing and monitoring these message boards.. Flying Dutchman and Olsen both have had bad batches of blades get past quality control a few times... just something that happens.. in most every business..

DnD from my understanding is replacing blades that was purchased from them if they are bad... I just going to use mine.. because most so far aren't too bad.. just a little frustrating being this time of the year and trying to get some production out and having to fuss with the blades.. I switched over to my FD-UR blades yesterday for a while..  My blades for the most part aren't breaking because of material failure.. the blades I have seem to be all different lengths and I have to cut them down.. as when sawing on the Hawk you bottom the blade out on both ends.. which I just now thought of something... this wouldn't affect me on my DeWalt.. cause the blade can hang out the top end of the clamp... Guess what.. I'm going to be cutting on today.. I think the once that do break are because I'm not getting them cut to the correct length which is changing the tension of the blade that = failure... no more failed blades today on the DeWalt I hope..

I think someone else had an issue with a batch of Pegas that had a notch where they were breaking. Probably from the same run. The notch was where they were supposed to be cut to length.

I agree with you Kevin I have used mostly Olson for the last 13 years and occasionally get a batch that breaks faster than normal. That is one of the many reasons I like my Hawk I pre-load a bunch of clamps with the current blade in use so that I have minimal interruption when in production mode.

Howdy,

I have always used FD and Olson blades myself. The benefits of the Hawk is, as you mentioned, Mr. Rolf, I have the ability to load several blades and not lose much cut time changin' out blades.

I did try a couple dozen #3 Pegasus blades some time back. I wasn't impressed with the end results, so I just stuck with FD and Olson. On occasion, I'll get a batch that will snap blades pretty fast, but seems like the ones I get that bust fast are #1 or smaller, and they'll ALWAYS bust when I'm in deep concentration with small detail! Kinda makes the ol' Hawk snort a little, & the heart skip a beat or two!😤

I actually used a #1R Pegas modified geometry(13.7 TPI) ) for cutting the parts on my last intarsia piece. 3/4 Poplar, walnut, cherry. maple, wenge. It is a thin blade and performed extremely well. I normally use the Olson Mach 3 for this. The Pegas is .004" thinner, insignificant but every bit helps when eliminating gaps. Especially when doing segmentation pieces.

I did try the 2/0 R (15 TPI) for cutting my very detailed ornament stacks. They were a bit too aggressive and I went back to my old standby Olson 2/0 R (28 TPI) much slower but much easier to control. I will play more in the off season.

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.

My problem is, I'm new enough to all this that I don't know why a blade breaks if one does. So far, I've had no problem with blade breakage of any brand. I just started using my latest batch of Pegas MGT #5 and so far nothing negative to report. I had only bought a couple dozen of them to try and just finally ran through them and opened the gross that I had just bought from DnD. That's when I noticed the end of the bottom of them had the "clipped" corner on them. No notches at all anywhere on the blades.

Does that clipped corner indicate the top or bottom end of the blade?

I've had them clipped on both ends or one end or the other... so I wouldn't rely on that clipped area to be top or bottom... it's not a marked blade that clipped area isn't supposed to be there...  those blades that are clipped like that are defective blades... Though for the most part have been working great for me on any of the saws I have as long as I can cut the end off at the right length for my Hawk to have proper tension... So far these clipped blades have been all sorts of different lengths for me.. so I'm using them on the DeWalt and Excalibur.. since I'm not getting consistent tension with them on the Hawk due to the various length blades..

Kevin, I measured them against some FD blades and mine are all the same length. You must have gotten a really odd bunch of blades.

Ray not sure how well it shows in the pictures but the blade on the left has the notch.. the very tip also is notched and that extended smaller notch is not supposed to be there.. so my blade is that much longer.. actually more than that much because the bottom of the blade is the same way.. I've been having to use side cutters and snip that little section off.. the issue is seeing where to actually cut it with the side cutters.. With the Hawk saw the blades install bottomed out in the lower clamp and the upper clamp.. then adjust the saw to the proper blade tension.. but having to cut the blades.. if I'm too short or too long in cutting it..well that effects the tension.. I'm not going to mess up my saw adjusting it to each blade I use so I opt to use these messed up blades on a different saw that doesn't automatically have the tension set like the EX or Dewalt..  Once you set up a Hawk tension.. you leave it alone.. and you get the same tension every time.. unless you get a bad batch of blades that are all different lengths like I have.. some of these have that on both top and bottom and some just top or just bottom.. some even have longer and shorter piece to be clipped off. so there is no consistency with the batch of blades I got.. I was going to just order new blades.. but they #5's are out of stock because they was messed up and.. DnD has been exchanging them.. I got into this new gross at a bad time because now nobody has good blades in stock.. Good thing I have other saws these blades will work on..

Also just to note... I don't think the blades are any weaker because of this notch.. I'm breaking them on my Hawk because of the tension changing from one blade to the next because I cannot cut them off the same length every time.. No breaking then so far on the other saws..

DnD is out of stock.. I just placed a order with Bear Woods.. they didn't mention being out of stock on the website.. so hoping they get me some good blades.. but that place has always been slow as pouring molasses in -20F temps LOL.. so it might have been quicker to just wait for DnD to get more stock.. 😂

I understand now what you are saying. I didn't realize the Hawks worked that way. Another reason for me to maybe have a Hawk someday. I just got a gross of blades from FD and I held them up to compare with the Pegas blades I'm using right now and they are exactly the same length. Strange.

Yeah.. not all my blades have that tip on them.. but so far all do have the notch..  Almost like their cutter that cuts the blade to length was broke or out of adjustment.. not sure but definately an issue.. and I hope my next blades are not like this.. Although.. this time of year I go through a lot of blades... I've used about half of this gross I opened up a couple weeks ago..

Why so many so fast? I must be doing something wrong. I have been doing a lot of stack cutting in red oak and haven't gone through a dozen blades.

Cutting plywood.. eats up the blades quite fast.. I've been sawing ornaments as much as I can just to keep up with orders and inventory.. and falling way behind.. sold out of over 50 different items...... yesterday was a slower day and today I'm not working much... taking a "me time" day off.. as much as I can anyway.. I've enjoyed reading the messages I've missed for the past 3 weeks.. I've been on here.. but not very much.. mostly just a quick pop in and back out, LOL.. Pretty much working from 6am to 10-11pm either packing orders or sawing 7 days a week for the last 3 weeks as my inventory depleted way too fast and all of a sudden.., LOL only cut for about 30min. today.. didn't even wear out one blade yet, LOL.. The next week and a half will be crazy with last minute shoppers ordering it today and asking if it can be there by yesterday, LOL.. I'm ready for the slow down...and so is the Hawk.. it's got a bad bearing or something... as it's squeaking down near the connecting rod or the motor.. area...stopped using it since those blades are all messed up anyway.. so now the EX-21 is getting a workout.. was going to use the old Hawk.. but dumb blades can't decide what size they wanna be LOL..

I thought having 50 each of my most popular ornaments would be plenty.. guess I thought wrong.. then some that was popular last year and I made 40-50 of and have only sold a dozen of.. just never know what will sell..
