then it says to link them to the new pattern announcement forum

how?

does that mean I create yet another new thread in the new pattern announcement forum, upload yet another copy of the pattern?  Seems odd to do it twice.

The idea is to make sure the patterns reside in the Pattern Library.  If they're only posted into the forum, they get buried pretty quickly and are hard to find.  The Pattern Library is our main repository of patterns and organized into categories so it's easier to find a specific kind of pattern.

You don't have to upload the pattern twice (in fact, it's better not to).  In the New Pattern Announcements, you can post a link to the pattern you uploaded and the software will generate a preview link.

Alternatively, you can click the Insert Other Media button above the Submit Reply button, then choose Insert Existing Attachment.  A popup window will appear.  Click the Gallery Images tab and choose your picture.  That will embed the actual file into the post so you don't have to re-upload.
