First - Scroll Saw Challenge

This month, it's an easy one.  Post your first project of 2019!  "Out with the old, in with the new,"as they say.  We don't want to see what you made last year; we want to see what you made in 2019.  Fresh off the saw.  When you post, tell us a little about it.  Who did you made it for and for what reason?  Or maybe a little backstory.  Projects are nice to see, but it's the story that goes with it that makes it special.

This is the first item I made for 2019.. made it because I sold it off the website on the 30th of Dec. as it was a made to order item I had listed.. so that is the first thing I made and why I made it... Lame story I know..  Oh.. my first sale of 2019 would be this ornament too.. but it was already made..  Started off my new year making some new clocks ( cut but not finished yet ) so those pictures will be later.. maybe the end of the month.. Also been cutting ornaments that I had sold out of in Dec. to start rebuilding that inventory for next year..

I found this piece of what I think is acrylic at the hospital where I work and put this little Sue Mey pattern on it.  Cheap Walmart tea light and there you go.  I thought it looked cool.

I did these Tuesday (Jan. 1). Can’t get much more “first” than that! The eagle feather is part of the 3 that Steve Good offers. I did the other two last year so had to do the 3rd to finish the set. I’m not at all pleased with how the Poplar takes the stain. Someone told me it’s better to paint Poplar. So I’m going to do the eagle and wolf again in Oak to match the Indian. 

The Love Wine was done from pallets. One is Sycamore the other is Oak, I think. Could be Pine, not sure. I know they were both hard to cut!. Dulled a blade or two on them. The Man Cave is scrap Luan 1/8” plywood. Not my favorite stuff either, won’t be buying that gain. 

So anyway, here they are!

Some friends of ours (and a co-worker of mine) are buying their first house this year.  So as a housewarming gift, I thought this would work.  Ran it past my wife (she approved), did some fiddling in Inkscape, and started doing some cutting.  Its not a difficult cut, lots of exterior to go around but nothing insanely challenging, other than the fact that I got a stye in my left eyelid a while back, and when cedar fever season hit early Dec, it started growing.  Finally went to the doctor, and the stuff she gave me, after about four days, swelled up my eyelid so bad that to finish cutting today I had to close my left eye and was considering going inside and digging out a bandana to make a makeshift eyepatch.  Inconveniently, I'm left-eye dominant.  Closing that eye actually made it easier to see.  So....time to call the Dr and find out is going on with my eye.    ....I hate going to the doctor.  Sorry, possibly too much info, but hey, Travis *did* ask for backstory!  LOL  Anyway, I finished up the piece today, just need to get it stained, backed, and framed.  I'll post the pattern in the library if anyone's interested.  Word of caution, there's several places where there's just one tiny bridge between sections, the whole thing is fairly...wobbly.  So be careful when sanding.

Here in Estonia constrution workers have a "bad" reputation (probably came from soviet era, dont now why). All of them are considered "drunkers and pigs". If you are not a bisnesmen and work with your hands and mind, you are a "stupid".

Hi -- well, here is my first project for the year - cut but unfinished at this point. It is a Dreamcatcher, a Sue Mey design. Small bit of a story here: the feathers are not from her design, but rather from a design she made available in the Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts magazine (winter 2018 issue).  What she provided was a compound cut of several feather designs. Instead however I used her designs on some very warped pieces of Red Oak that I had. I had NO luck at all at flattening and then keeping flat those pieces, but I held on to them "just-in-case". It's hard to tell from the picture but each one of those feathers has a curve to it. I put the two designs together and what you see is what I came up with. Happy to share it.

My first project was a big one.  I am working on developing my technique of creating layered cartoon style scroll saw art.  I spent roughly 40 hours on this project. The dimension (including frame) are 15.5"x21.5".  I used naturally colored wood with no stains along with stained glass to pull this off.  Aside from the silhouette layers, I did not use any paints.  As for the woods, I used Padauk, Yellowheart, Walnut, Bloodwood, Oak, Figured Maple, Sapele, Aspen, Tigerwood and Mahogany.  If you want to see more of my process - here is a link to the full build album https://imgur.com/gallery/BeB2nKi.

I recently got a dewalt scroll saw and this is my first attempt to make a pattern from a picture. This is my grandson on his skateboard

 it my grandson wanted to use the saw so I quit at this point, he is happy with it and is back in California. I wish I was some where warm!

My first project for 2019 is a rather simple one.  I am recovering from hip joint replacement surgery and, next week, I will "graduate" for my Physio Therapy sessions with Jane.  I made  her this plaque which I will present at the end of my last session:

This was designed by Chachi and it is the second such plaque that I havemade.

The foreground is 3mm thick cherry and the background is 7mm thick Jatoba.

WOW!  That very innovative. 

I particularly like the idea of using a sheet of coloured glass as one of the layers and I am going to look for an opportunity to do that.

That is just amazing. So cool. As one who dropped everything I was doing just to play Nintendo, it brings back lots of memories.  Now where did I put my Nintendo..... Hmmmm

These are my first 2 cuts of 2019. Since we are in Florida, my wife needs a napkins holder with a Florida motif, so I found one from Sue Mey. The other is fromSteve Good, I guess he got tired of winter and decide to make a spring/summer pattern, easy to cut, now will decide what kind of colors to apply.

Well I made this for the shop walls. This is the first time I've ever used Doug fir for anything other than framing. I had some 4x4's 2 feet long left over from building my shop cabinets a few years ago. Glad I saved them and the frame turned out pretty good I think. I used redwood for the splines. About half way through this I had an "Ah ha!" moment where it clicked for me. Turns and pivots became easier and less stressful, blade choice improved and  finally did a project without breaking it. A lot of you have cut this already but I enjoyed it. Oh and if you look carefully you'll still see some dust on the saw. I remembered to take the pic before I cleaned up. Ha ha.
