compound cut pattern question

I did, but Google didn’t help. 😉😔 but we all know, you have to ask it the right way and maybe I screwed that part up. 😊🙃

We have Google Home, and I love messing with "her". I ask questions that she can't answer like "how high is up"? She's still ruminating over that one. Fractions can be tricky especially as the distance between when we were taught and the present day gets farther and farther apart. As the saying goes "another day goes by that I didn't use algebra".

Well unfortunately, Algebra and I were never on good “speaking terms” way back then when I was trying to learn it 😉🙃 so that has never helped. 🙄 good thing for my kids, they got my husband’s math and science skills, and my reading and history. ☺️

I'm very lucky in that I have a great memory. I am also very good with numbers. That doesn't mean I'm a mathematician though. I just think logically so things are easy for me to figure out in most cases. For some reason, I have a tough time with Inkscape though. It is sinking in little by little. My biggest problem is that I am a bit impulsive. I tend to "jump" into things too quickly.

This is what I do and I hated and did terrible in math.

First covert fractions to decimals.  So 1 7/8" = 1.875".  1 1/2" = 1 .5.  So you divide 1.5 by 1.875 and you get .8.  That means if you copy the original at 80% it will fit 1.5" stock.

Thank you Scott. I will give that a try.  I asked my husband for help figuring it out last night when he got home, but then  think he forgot.  He works hard so I didn't bother him figured he would eventually remember to help me out.  Sad to say that fractions and decimals always made me hide! 😉😉

Scott is correct, here is the formula.

Just a note you don't want to make these too small.

I gave up on math in high school when they started to make us memorize theorems. I was too lazy to do that. Little did I know that my future required me to do lots of math (high energy physics research) Thank goodness for computers and CAD programs. I managed to BS them for 35 years😯

I have forgotten all of it since retiring.  but this is the formula   A * X = B    A is the original size 1.875, B is the size you want (1.5), X times 100 is the percentage

So to solve for X we divide both sides of the formula by A ,  X= B/A    X= 1.5/1.875   X=.8    which is 80 %

Yes you see, its when they wanted me to figure out those A, B and X's that my brain began to get muddled and my eyes glazed over - especially when they introduced fractions and turning them into decimals and all that stuff. 😩 Fortunately, no job I ever had required me to do high end math and i just sent my kids to my husband after about the 5th grade. 😉😄  However, I can do the basic skills that are needed for life like add, subtract, multiple and divide! So my checkbook and bank accounts are good. 😄

Thank you to both you and Scott.  I will make a note of it and put it in my workroom.  For whatever reason - in part because I seldom use it I suppose - that "stuff" just has never wanted to stick in my brain. Then I panic when I see fractions and decimals and converting them. 😔

Some time ago I made a kinda cheat sheet for common reductions and enlargements so I would have it when I needed it.  Of course I can't seem to find it at the moment.  Must be next to the spare set of keys I also can't presently find.

I seem to understand how this is done. If you have not yet solved this problem, then I can help with examples with photos.

Step № 4
This is what 1/4 of your product looks like.
Using steps 1, 2, 3 it is necessary to cut out the remaining parts of the wooden bars.
Then glue the resulting parts in this order: 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 You need to glue the side where you had pasted the pattern before.
When the product dries, it remains only to polish and clean the gluing points.

P.S. If you still have questions, I will answer them with pleasure.

Hi everyone, I have a question on these patterns. There for air plant holders. I can't seem to figure out how to do these. I've done compound cuts before where you fold the pattern down the middle and put it on two sides of the blank wood. These patterns are in SSW spring issue 66, 2017. It's telling me to print out 4 patterns for each one so I'm guessing they want you to put the pattern on all four sides. Seems like a big plant holder. I did try one where I just folded it in half like I normally do but it only did half the wood. The patterns have the center line where you fold it but that isn't working right. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong. Thanks Ralph.

Hello rdatelle
Your patterns do not give me rest))
Today at work I planted a dummy in front of a computer.
So that the surveillance cameras would think that I was working, and I myself  hid in the closet and made your air plant holders. Of course this is a joke. ))
But in every joke there is some truth. 😉

Now I see how you did it. I was trying to cut the folded pattern on both sides like I normally do. I didn't realize you need 4 pieces of wood to for one pattern. Thanks again Ivan. That really spells it out good now.

The funny thing is the size that I have turned out. )) Where to find such small flowers?
