Blade identification

Recommended Posts

I be a newbie...less than a week.

I have several dozen Olson blades-various unit ID numbers.

When received they all were identified (PGDT497, etc etc) on the packaging.  Are all now in labeled tubes.

Is there a way (other than experience) to identify blades that may have escaped their storage containers?  I have magnified the blades and find no identifying labeling on them.

Thanks for your time and patience!

Sam

Other than trying to count the teeth or using a micrometer to measure the blade thickness, I don't see any way. But, what you have are a bunch of "practice" blades. Give them all a try on different woods. You'll get to where you understand what each type of blade does and what it's designed for. Most of us here use either Flying Dutchman, Olsen, or Pegas blades of one type or another. Blades are probably the biggest mystery to the hobby of scrolling. Takes time to figure it out but you will if you stick with it. Welcome to the Village. Lots of great info here.

When I first started I would spray paint the blade end a different color and kept a chart. Long abandoned that now it is knowledge if i am not sure I will not use it on a delicate piece and save for something random and not critical But you learn real quick to keep better care of the second thing that is important in this hobby and that is the blades after the saw.

The letters, in the blade model number PGDT stands for "precision ground double tooth" and the 497..Not quite sure what the first two are for.. maybe just a part number for the first two but I believe the last number sort of represents the size number of the blade.. the reference number of the blade in your number example is a #7... The Olsen PGDT series blades only come in I believe size #5,7,and 9.. 5 would be smaller than the other numbers..  Hope this is what you was referring to with your question..

Okay, just re-read your posting..Not the info you was looking for.. I would say bout the only way is to measure the size of the blade.. over time you'll know somewhat just by looking at the blade and comparing it to other blades that you know what they are.. to sort of see the difference in size..
