scrollingforsanity Posted January 20, 2019 Report Share Posted January 20, 2019 I put my new Pegas Chuck heads om my Seyco saw about Dec.1 2018. Love them. Yesterday the blade started slipping out of the top and bottom holders. I clean all my blades with spray brake cleaner and a cloth to remove any oily residue before using them I spent hours trying to figure it out as I was trying to finish a project for a friend. Finally took the thumb screws out of my other saw and put them in. Fixed the problem. I would not think that the thumb screw sets would wear out so quickly. I have had them last on other saws for up too a couple years. I did take the allen screws out of the left side of the holders on the Pegas heads and they appeared to be contacting only about half the surface. The end of the thumb screws appeared to be worn as well. I could not find an address to contact Pegas. kmmcrafts Posted January 20, 2019 Report Share Posted January 20, 2019 I didn't like the shape / style of the thumb screws that came with my clamps... so I put the ones I got for my DeWalt ( extra set that I never needed ) in it... so.. no issues for me at all... Lay down a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper. Very carefully sand the tip till it is dull. I have a tip on doing this somewhere here, I’ll see if I can find it. Ok, I don’t know how to create a link on my iPad. Go over to Works in Progress & Tutorials and look for Simple jig for blade slippage. I just bumped it so it should be on top. I have been scrolling over twenty years and have had to sand the ends before to get extra life out of the tips but not after three months and paying that much for something. Thanks for all the feedback and tips. I didn't realize there was that much difference between the Dewalt thumb screws and the Seyco/Excalibur ones. I bought the extra set once and then found that Seyco sells just the tips.. then I read about the sanding the ends off.. so i did that and never used the new set screws or the tips.. BTW.. if you order the tips set.. don't do as I did and thought each set was for just the upper or lower, LOL a set includes both upper and lower... so since I haven't even wore out the originals.. I assume I should be good for many years on these.. LOL.... especially now that I end to use the Hawk more now anyway For what it's worth.. when I talked with Ray about them.. he said they was all sourced from the same company.. at least back then.. so the DeWalt and Ex screws was made by the same company... I'm guessing the Delta too? BTW, I do agree with you about the price and the fact that they shouldn't be getting worn out already.. But I also am betting that Pegas didn't actually make these.. possible a bad batch went though or the company that made them maybe got a bad batch of steel.. I hope this isn't going to be the normal for these.. you know... it seems every company tries to cut cost and cheapen things up... They also seem to have control problems and run bad batches of items as well. I already have several extra sets of tips I recently purchased from Ray. I must have been anticipating needing them. I must need to take more time sanding down the old ones as I seem to not get them flat and they don't last very long. Dave Monk Posted January 21, 2019 Report Share Posted January 21, 2019 It's been quite a while back........I believe it was Steve Good...........drill a hole a touch smaller the the screw in a piece of wood about 1/4" thick ........screw the screw in until it just barely come out the other side..........then sand it with a sander. tgiro Posted January 21, 2019 Report Share Posted January 21, 2019 This is from Ray @ SeyCO - it works great and I use it regularly when I have blade slippage in my clamps. 1. Use a piece of scrap - 3" x 2" x 3/8". Drill 7/32" holes, about an inch apart, on the center line of the board. 2. Screw the setscrew and thumb screw into the board until the ends are just flush with the other side of the board. 3. Lay a piece of 220 grit sand paper on a perfectly flat surface. Place the board on the sandpaper with the screw ends down. 4. Rub the board around on the sand paper until the screw ends are shiny and any nicks or dents are removed. Remove the screws from the board and replace them in the saw. Pay attention to the alignment. I use feeler gauges to set the setscrew 1mm proud of the left side of the blade gap, in the clamp. Do that on both upper and lower clamps. I do this as part of my semi annual maintenance drill. Even when I haven't been having slippage in the clamps. I did this on my old DW788, on the OEM clamps on my EX-21 and I do it on the Pegas clamps. Note - The thumbscrews from the DW788, The Excalibur saws, and the Pegas clamps are interchangeable. The setscrews are, also, interchageable. but the Dewalt and Excalibur setscrews are not long enough for the locking nut that Pegas uses. I do not know about the new versions of the Excalibur design - King, Axeminister, Seyco, or even the new Excaliburs. Seyco sells the setscrews and tips for the thumbscrews as sets. The thumbscrew tips fit the Dewalt and Excaliber thumbscrews, but I haven't tried them in the Pegas thumbscrews. Also never though of the feeler gauge trick, I am going to try that as well I think that will help, I had some new tips on hand purchased from Seyco. Actually the company I purchased my Pegas chuck heads from are sending me new tips to replace the other ones. The tips I have from Seyco seem tp fit the Pegas thumb screws just fine. The swivel tips part # 90316 for the thumb screws are $ 2.30 and the nut and set screw part # 90302 for the left side is $ .80 plus shipping.
