Popular Post JimErn Posted January 26, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted January 26, 2019 found a new use for them, well new to me anyway. fill them with saw dust, label it, and anytime you need to make wood filler for that type of wood you have saw dust available Phantom Scroller, Scrolling Steve, wombatie and 8 others 10 1 Quote
Foxfold Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 What a great idea, I've got loads of plastic test tube, I'll definitely use that idea, thanks xxx OCtoolguy, SCROLLSAW703 and kmmcrafts 2 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 I used a lot of pill bottles for that also. OCtoolguy, Tomanydogs, SCROLLSAW703 and 1 other 4 Quote
meflick Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 That's a great idea Jim. I think we will be following your lead on this one at my house. Thanks for sharing. SCROLLSAW703, kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy 3 Quote
jollyred Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 I use recycled pill bottles. Anyone over 60 will have a plentiful supply. And they are paid for by the insurance company. kmmcrafts, Roberta Moreton and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 Great idea.. I've done this but instead I used zip-loc baggies.. the freezer ones have a space to write on them that I used to label what kind of sawduct it was.. While on the sawdust topic.. How good is the sawdust for using as a wood filler that we produce with our saws? I ask because it's not completely just sawdust... it's part of your paper pattern, tape, shelf liner or whatever you use that is also on the wood you're cutting.. so I've always wondered about this.. anytime I've needed sawdust for this I've went out and cut.. " just wood" to make the sawdust.. which is why I always saved it in the baggies.. OCtoolguy and fredfret 1 1 Quote

flarud Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 I was using empty peanut butter jars. Now that I think about it, that may be an overkill! I have had one full with red oak sawdust and shaving from the planer for a couple of years now, along with another jar full of Walnut,, guess how much I have used out of them. Not even a test tube amount! Good idea. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Rockytime Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 With dust collection I have very little sawdust. What sawdust I have ends up in the large collection bag which includes other materials from my lathe. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

The way I see it, that minuscule amount of paper included will work as filler and it will sand and take stain/oil, after all paper is wood. I didn't think about it but the recent batch of filler I mixed up worked fine, and it sanded fine too. EDIT: tape and shelf liner I don't know, don't use them. But I doubt that will make much difference ------------ Rocky, when you need more turn off the dust collection, make saw dust, collect it, turn it back on.
