Picked up my repaired saw earlier today!! They replaced the motor,  brush assembly and connection rod assembly.   Hopefully I have time tonight to do some sawdust making!!! The only thing that I should have done before sending it  off would have been to put the old broken blade clamps back on the machine.  Oh well.  Also, apparently  when the service  shop I took mine to there was another one with the same issue; I was glad that it wasn't  anything I  did😁

Sadly, I have spoken to soon😪.  Got it all set  up and before I cut anything did a test run.  Sounds better than it did, but still a lot of knocking and some hesitation in the speed.  Heading back to the shop at lunch today. ps, I put the original clamps on this time - maybe they will fix them as well!!!

Question for the experts: is it possible that the variable speed control, or the board, is bad?

From my experience with machine tools, a faulty ground (ie. Loose ground wire, broken solder connection, etc) can cause all kinds of wierd problems. 

If the mechanism checks out - no loose joints, well lubed, etc, - then it may be time to start looking for a short somewhere or a bad ground wire. Just a thot.

So far, the motor has been changed and a connecting rod assembly, correct?

If the varible speed control had excessive dust in it, would it do this?

It sounds like when they reassembled it, they either didn't get the wedge in correctly or the plate that the wedge slides against fell out. Either way, that's something they should have discovered if they did a proper test run on your saw. Shoddy workmanship is the order of the day.

Sounds a lot like my DeWalt saw when it's cold.. as for the hesitation part..  and it's hard to tell through the camera microphone.. but is the clanging sound due to the hesitation? because mine is also a little noisy when it does this.. usually clears up once ran for 15 second.. but in real cold temps sometimes won't even come on.. sometimes just makes a couple strokes and stops..tap the upper clamp / arm area and it turns on a few more strokes.. in this case... I tend to use a small heater back at the motor to warm it slightly.. couple minutes and she's ready to cut... It's done that since it was new.. just like a old person... don't wanna work in the cold 😂

😂😂.. I wondered who might comment this... I'm old I guess.. because I sure don't wanna work out there in the cold either... at least today and that one day last week... probably tomorow too.. High today was like -4F.. I been out working... but not for very long at a time.. made two clock bases and sanded / finished up two clocks.. Tomorrow supposed to be a lot warmer though.. supposed to get up to zero F so most likely I'll be sawing.. Yesterday was 12F and I worked almost 4 hours sawing a couple clocks and doing some prep work for tomorrows clock cutting..

I feel guilty when I see everyone's temperature issues. Got plenty of space in my basement for scrolling, although I've got 25 years of junk to move around before I can really set it up the way I want. My garage has the same size oil burner as the house does to do larger projects. Problem there is I haven't really done anything out there for a few years so now waiting for my son to service it before I risk turning it on again but he just bought a house with a baby on the way so he's a little busy right now. Keep warm friends. Wind chills only going down to about -10 around Philly. Down right balmy around here compared to some of you.

Temperature doesn't matter for me, workshop is in the basement.  Which is good as it was -51C with the windchill this morning when I woke up!!!!  The discussion I had with the shop here in town was that they thought the "board" "electronics stuff" should have been replaced, but Dewalt thought differently.  It's there now and hopefully it won't be quite as long as the first time around.  I also switched the blade clamps back to the originals (which the bearings needed to be replaced) and hope that they might do them (goodwill gesture!!).

You see that sliding wedge up at the top of the upper arm? It slides against a hardened steel plate and that piece can fall out on reassembly or be in wrong and that would allow the wedge to rattle. I'm just guessing at your noise but knowing they just had your saw apart, it makes sense to me that judging from the sound, it might be that.

Well,  Here is the latest update - DeWalt couldn't figure out what was wrong. Apparently replaced the motor again and the control panel and who knows what else.  They shipped a new saw. Got a voice mail today that it arrived.  I will be picking up tomorrow.  It will be an exciting weekend because I also ordered a new bandsaw (Rikon 10-306) which arrived yesterday and I will be picking up tomorrow as well.  I am so excited to get both!!!!!

Glad to here you are getting a new saw. Good luck with you two new toys.

It always disappointed  and amazed  when you have a "professional" fix things and they end up not having a clue. 

Knocking has nothing to do with electronics. It is mechanical and if you know your product should be easy to diagnose. The electronics are another issue. My Hawks electronics has a delayed  slow start (soft start) designed into it. I don't notice it now, but initially, when I first got the saw I did. I think most scroll saws have some level  of Soft start.

Glad to hear you get a new saw. Disappointing that they can't figure out what is wrong. Enjoy the bandsaw. If my Sears 10" ever croaks, I'm getting that one also. Love the fence on it. Have fun!
