kmmcrafts
Cut this out this morning, pattern suggest 2-1/8 inch clock insert. Not wanting to add yet another size to my inventory I’m going with something I already have on hand. First picture is a 2” insert and the other is 2-3/4” What one looks best in your opinion? I personally think I’ll pribably go with the 2” but thought I’d ask others opinions. Probably make a base out of a contrasting color ( probably walnut ). The larger clock doesn’t leave much wood around the edge but the actual hole is only 2 or 2-1/8 I think so plenty of room even though it doesn’t look like it. If I was to make it as a wall type clock which I thought about, I think the larger clock would be better. Scrappile
I vote for the 2" and reducing the diameter of the circle it is put on a little, or not..... kmmcrafts, spotsdad, OCtoolguy and 2 others
meflick
Hmmm, tough call. Really depends in part on how "big" you want the clock face to be to "see". Being that I am getting older, and the eyes are not what they use to be, I kinda like the bigger clock face. Even besides from that, I like that it is just the clock - not the "extra" wood around the clock I think. But if you reduced that like Paul suggested, that would work maybe a little better for me "visually". Both are nice though. So, that said - since you already have both cut out, why not post both to your etsy and other accounts and see what gets the most orders? Since you cut to order most of these as you get them in - easy enough to cut either and you don't need to add another clock size as I assume you are using them both already. kmmcrafts
This is what happens when you put the cart in front of the horse, LOL... I didn't give much thought to the clock size until I had already cut it out.. next time if I cut it again.. I'll likely change the design either bigger or smaller to fit the clocks I use.. See what happens after cutting so many ornaments? I forget how to make clocks... Actually spent most of my day today looking for that perfect portrait style pattern to cut.. I love cutting them but... they are a little harder to sell.. so I just cut one out every now and then... been a year since I've done a portrait cutting.. Man... so many choices.. have spent way too much time searching for the one I want. might as well just make some more clocks I guess that way I'll at least get something done ... I have inventory to build up but just looking for something that I haven't yet cut and give myself a bit of challenge.. Dang, Never mind... just got an order come in... now I have something to make Edited February 5, 2019 by kmmcrafts OCtoolguy

ScollSaw Slasher
Sorry Kevin, neither floats my boat with the proportions, but especially the larger clock. Only my opinion. JTTHECLOCKMAN
Well if you are interested in my opinion, the larger clock insert overwhelms the piece by alot and I would not go that way. The 2" is too small. But with that said the options are places like Walmart and AC Moore, or Michaels or even Hobby Lobby sell the in between size inserts. Now they are more expensive but if this is a one time thing and you will change at a later date the size of the pattern then it might be worth the extra couple dollars for one insert. Now another suggestion would be, you said you will use a different colored wood for the base, is make a detail skirt around the clock insert. Make it the exact 1/2 of what the space is between the edge of the clock and the outside edge of the clock circle. You could go 3/4 of the distance if that is too thin, but you want the light wood o show the circle too. You can just make a circle or get fancy and do some sort of edging. Make it a thin layer nothing thicker than 1/8" That is my ideas. OCtoolguy
dgman
From my view, the small one is too small and the larger one is too big. For the pattern size, I would go with the clock size recommended. OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts
WayneMahler
I would go with the smaller clock but trim the area around it down to a more appealing showing. Seems the big clock takes away from the whole thing in my opinion. OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts
Fab4
Hi Kevin: I agree with cutting around the smaller clock The backer for the clock will be away from the horse but you still have lots of meat to the clock The second one like others have said is too big Good Luck Fab4 OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts
Sam777
IMHO, the smaller clock looks better but you should reduce the size of the circle mounting it. Great work Sam OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts

A 1/16th on each side wouldn't look that much different. I definitely don't care for the big one. Do they offer a 2 1/2"? I think that would look better. kmmcrafts
rjweb
Kevin, I vote for 2 3/8 inches, just kidding go for the larger one, the small one is lost, RJ OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts 1
kmmcrafts
Thanks for all the opinions.. they pretty much say what i was thinking myself.. I think I'll just set this project off the the side and soon I've gotta place an order for some 3-1/2" inserts so I think I'll just order a clock for this project.. then I think the next one I cut I'll size it to fit the clocks I keep on hand.. If I do all these patterns to to the specs that the designers suggestions I'd need to own a clock parts store with all the different sizes and styles, LOL Thanks again everyone, OCtoolguy
JTTHECLOCKMAN
I typically use 1-3/8, 2" or 2-3/4" but I do have others that I like the style and works well on certain patterns. I love theme clocks and on that one a horse clock insert would go great kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy
JimErn
late to the party again, but I like the smaller clock, but not the wood relief around it. If I could I would reduce the size of the clock relief area to the size of the smaller clock or 1/16 larger. Birchbark
I'm late i see. But thought i would throw my two cents in. This is the way i would save the ones you cut until you could get a pattern sized correctly. Was thinking something like this. spirithorse
Cool idea, @birchbark Kevin, I like the smaller clock for a desk clock even with the wood perimeter.' God Bless! JTTHECLOCKMAN
That basically was my idea but thought instead of cutting dashes to use the colored wood he is using on the base and thin to a veneer and use as a skirt. I have done that many times to accent the clock and tie it into the base. OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts

It sort of "balances" it out. Great idea! Birchbark
