Today’s Lumber Haul ( Hard Maple )

My brother owns a lumber mill business and called me last Friday to come dig what scraps I want out of the scrap bin and the guys were there doing grade lumber and they cut off ends and what not whatever is left goes into the wood stove unless I come get it. Last month I hauled about this much cherry and a little oak. He said they’ll be there again next week if I want more. I didn’t get time enough to get the other bin. But maybe swing back tomorrow to get the last bit.

First picture is one of the 5 bins and the other is what I dug out of the bin. Some nice pieces of curly hard maple and I think there was a couple Birdseye.

Hard Maple doesn't scroll very easily though.. I might make cutting boards out of a lot of this.. Or practice using my CNC on some of it too.. . Most of the the cherry load I got will become clocks.. if scroll sawing it.. it'll all have to be resawed in half as they are thick pieces..

below is the pictures of one of the loads of cherry with just a few oak boards in there too.

I sure wish I could use this stuff now.. but it's still very green.. I stacked it up and stickered it to dry.. Probably be a long time before I can use it.. This is why I don't fool with getting this stuff from him very often.. many of the pieces are short 15" ish.. and it's hard to stack it up in a way to dry out without warping etc.. A lot of times getting these cut offs etc only get about half of it being worth using buy the time it dries out good enough to use.. and the space it takes up while it's drying.. I usually get a 4 x 4 foot pallet and stack the lumber on this layering it so it all can breath.. but it's hard to get enough of it to weigh enough to keep it from warping etc..  we'll see how this turns out in a few months.. if nothing else it's practice wood for the CNC and fire pit..

I have some ash and some spalted maple he gave me about 4 years ago that I just started using up a little bit of.. It cuts nice but I don't like doing fretwork with it as the light / dark spots of the stuff sort of hides the fretwork.. Thinking about making bowls and bandsaw boxes with it..

Have thought about milling some of this stuff down and selling boxes of 3/4" or less thick ( scroll saw friendly ) boxes similar to what Ooch Hardwoods does.. Don't think I'd want to get involved with specific orders of sizes etc.. but not too hard to put a bundle together and mail it out..

Where was my call to come and help. I would make the 80 minute drive to help for a share. I just got over 800 2' pieces cedar for free to use in the woodworking club's kids birdhouse day. That's enough cedar to last 3 years. We usually get around 50 kids a year and so far we have 40 signed up for this year.
