Nice cutting BTW. I'm going to make a few presumptions. The wood is naturally light colored. It's a domestic hardwood. If those assumptions are correct, the fine, straight grain is the only other clue we can gather from the picture. You already ruled out poplar and maple, which would be the most obvious choices. I'm going to take a guess and say beech or birch. If neither of those, then I think some hints are in order. You got it Bill, It's Beach. Looks a lot like Red oak before I stained it. It cost me the same as red oak so I thought I would try it. I like it because the grain is closed and doesn't split too easy. It is cuts slow because it seems to be pretty hard. meflick, lawson56 and Scrolling Steve

Karl S
I totally agree, but some people do it for some reason.

A lot of cabinet manufacturers do it to help cover the light wood to make the color more uniform.
ScollSaw Slasher
You're right there Dave as to more uniform color on a large cabinet project. In addition, most people think of the cherry color as the aged cherry color which naturally darkens over time. I had one client many years ago that was highly upset when a new cherry cabinet I made wasn't dark enough. Oh well! kmmcrafts
My brother gave me some Beach lumber a couple years ago for a big order I had of deer head mounts .... I thought the stuff cut nicer than Oak.. and like Dave said it's a closed grain wood.. also finishes pretty nice.. I find it's nicer to work with than Oak.. But.. I don't see it a lot in my area for sale.. Dave Monk
