teachnlearn
Been around computers a few years. My first college computer class used a 'mainframe computer'. Had to go to the computer center and create 'punch cards'. My first home computer was a Commador 128. Gone through many software programs over the years. Now my wife and I are disabled vets, we scrape by on a little VA income. Never seem to have the money for a software program and always look at free programs. Many have free with the option to buy with more features. I have used this next program for years and like it. Wish the money was there to kick in for a lic. There is a group of software that captures the screen. When there is something I want to save for later I use this software to capture it. Anything from an article to a picture of a woodshop that I like the setup. Screenhunter 7 has three versions. Free, Plus and Pro. They range from $20 to $30 and a group package of $99. I have used version 6 and on startup, and it goes right to the software screen. I loaded ver 7 and it has a confusing difference for the free software. The request for lic comes up, just close that window and the free limited version will work. Another thing with this software is every time it's loaded it will ask if you want to load it as if it's being installed again. Always click yes. This comes from old programming days of starting the software and when its closed it has to be reloaded. When the software is first loaded click the SAVE IMAGE, on the sidebar. Click one of the options of how you want to save your screen capture, 'picture'. On the bottom is Folder, which is where you want the file to be saved, ie png, jpeg. I believe the default is desktop. Click back to capture. If you want to capture an image click the top camera. A crosshair will appear. Put the crosshairs on the top left corner of the picture, hold the left mouse button and move the rectangle to surround the picture. Let go of the left button, if your sound is on you will hear a click. PICTURE TAKEN! It will save as Screenhunter num. ie Screenhunter01.jpeg, Screenhunter02.jpeg. Take the time to rename these during or after your use or it's going to become confusing to find what you want. The video camera on top is a new 7 feature to screen grab videos. I believe the version limits it to 1 minute. This is a nice new toy to play with for Saint Patrick’s Day and my anniversary which my wife will want me to remember. They also put out "Snagit" but you have to buy that one. Jing is free. I use it all the time. I am going to give your suggestion a try. It might be even better than Jing if it is faster. Thanks for your suggestion.
OCtoolguy
Thanks for the great software suggestion. I just installed it and gave it a run. It works very well. I think I will like it and be using it often.
GrampaJim
If you are comfortable with computers (or even if your not), take a look at Ubuntu Linux. A complete operating system that will do everything a Windows can do. Best part - it free, free, free. Never pay for a program, or "new" version, or patch. I have been using it for years. Did it mention its free. OCtoolguy

The one and only software package I have ever purchased was Roboform back when you could buy it for life at $29.95. Now, it's $19.95 a year for each computer. My lifetime one is still good for my desktop machine. The absolute best password/login/i.d. keeper there is.

Never investigated 'on the list', weather all the software has to be converted to a Linux version, or trashed and find equivalent offers. My wife gets frustrated that some of the sites change security so we have to manually find the password and user name on Roboform. I just like the look/feel/familiarity of Windows programs. Just what I'm used to. I learned back when DOS was the thing and when Windows came along, I just gravitated to it. RJF For me, it's what I ate this morning. Getting worse too. I was typing something yesterday and had the word in my mind but when I got to the point where I wanted to put it, it was gone. Couldn't for the life of remember what that word was. I guess we are running low on RAM memory.
Phantom Scroller
There is a snipping tool in windows which you can use to capture any part of the screen and save to anywhere on your computer search snipping tool. teachnlearn
Didn't know of the snipping tool. Just tried it. I've used screenhunter for so long I'll stay with it since I know everything about the software. There are so many window features hidden I could use a book to look them up and see them. I had a very thick manual for XP Windows and I could thumb through it to fix it or just learn of the hidden features. I'm a book learner and lover. Unfortunately so is my wife. We need a house with book cabinets for all the walls. Just don't have to power a book and they go anywhere. Rockytime
Ray told me about Jing. It works so easily and I use it often. It is always available. It just hangs at the top of the screen ready for instant use. Thanks again Ray. OCtoolguy and Phantom Scroller

I have mine on the left side of my screen about 3 inches up from the taskbar. It never gets in the way there. Since I installed the program that Teachlearn suggested, it now lives up at the top left of my screen with just a tiny bit of it's launch pad showing.. So, I have two to choose from. Well, actually 3 with snipit.

RJF That's weird. I know they have a great software called Snagit that is expensive. The company is called Techsmith and I have found Jing to be great. Give it a try. It won't cost you a penny.
