Pegas Saw Review - Initial Thoughts: As I begin using the new Pegas saw, I’ll report things that I notice. Not necessarily saying they are “good” or “bad”, but things I notice compared to heavy use of the DeWalt 788 the past 4 years (For those that don't know me, I wear out a DW every 12-15 months). I’ve only cut 6 puzzles today since setting it up. So I’m sure I’ll have more to report over time. The big test for me will be if I’m still using this saw in 3 years as that's the major test... longevity… I’ll report back in March of 2022. - Pegas saw runs very smooth, no vibration - There is a micro-second hesitation from when I press my foot pedal and the motor actually starts. Certainly not a big deal but I didn’t realize how often I’d just “bump” the saw sometimes to move the blade just a hair and can’t quite do it the same way now, just have to get used to that. - I bottom feed and the upper arm on the Pegas rises way out of the way and stays, very nice. If you feed from the top I think it could be less desirable due to having to feed the blade through the plastic membrane that is underneath the table which catches saw dust for sucking out with the vacuum system. - The Pegas blade chucks are excellent, as many folks already know and use on other saws. The hold tension nicely. - The vacuum system works very well. No dust falls from underneath. Now if only they could have it suck up the dust from the top. - Definitely need an optional light that attaches to the saw. I was able to rig up my DW light to use, but one specifically for the Pegas would be ideal. - There is not much table space at the front, between me and the blade. Not a big deal, just a noticeable difference. - Because I never use the tilt feature on saws I can’t really report on that, but from what I’ve heard and read, it’s a nice feature. -Last but not least... the Pegas does not cut quite as aggressively (fast) as the DW, but it's close enough. Much better than the Hawk that I purchased and couldn't adapt to. I'll definitely be able to live with this. When I first got it I thought it could use another inch up front but I don't notice it now. To me an attached light is a non issue. My eyes are to the point where a magnifier light is preferred. I know when I tried setting the Hawk more aggressively it screwed up my puzzle pieces and they wouldn't slide in and out, so I'll debate whether to try it or not on the Pegas. Well, if you want more tilt to the saw blade you can dial that motor and get a lot of it. Me, I want the blade straight up and down as much as possible. kmmcrafts Posted March 21, 2019 Report Share Posted March 21, 2019 (edited) The tilt on the Pegas or like saws is not the same tilt you get with a Hawk... Just sayin.. Hawks tilt set up is not ideal for doing detail work.. The Hawk actually tilts the blade at an angle.. the Pegas and like saws will do more of a rocking motion.. I think you'll find you can make it just as aggressive as the DW and still make the puzzles correctly.. If your Pegas is like the Excalibur.. the blade speed is much less than the DW too.. hotshot Posted March 22, 2019 Report Share Posted March 22, 2019 (edited) I'm always trying to tune the aggression out of my saw, but once you learn to tune it, you will find you can take it to the extremes if you so desire. It will be interesting to see where you end up with this. Many folks remove the plastic dust collection membrane. I took mine off almost immediately. The membrane and the dust collection holes in the table are the only things I don't like about the design. Overall, I love these Taiwan saws, regardless of the Brand stuck to the side. I rebuilt my DW a few months ago, packed it with synthetic grease, and put Pegas clamps on it and it is a much better machine than it was when it was new. That said, I am still considering upgrading to a Pegas, mainly because I do a fair amount of relief cuts and want to do a lot more. If nothing else, the Pegas wins the award for the prettiest scroll saw, in my book. Another way you may find to adjust the aggressiveness of the cut is try a little more aggressive blades on the Pegas. I know the same blade cuts differently on my Hegner than it does on the Seyco. The Hegner is less aggressive than the Seyco. I think if a person could fit the Seyco's big table (without the rectangular hole in it) on the Pegas saw, it would be about the only thing that could improve the Pegas. Love the blade clamps & the fact that the blade tension is retained. The plastic membrane for dust collection, located underneath the table, came off on its own after about 6 hours of saw-use. I wasn't using the dust collection anyway and I'm sure it can be placed back on with some heavier duty glue / silicone. I feed from the top, so I'm kind of glad it's gone anyway because it is next to impossible to top-feed with it in place. Could definitely use a light...but couldn't all scroll saws? I don't notice the delay mentioned by Iggy from the time I step on the foot switch. Purchased it from bearwood.com. It's worth mentioning that their customer service is top-notch. Very friendly and helpful. They shipped the saw with a replacement tension lever which concerns me a little...do they wear out quickly??? They also shipped a pack of Pegas blades to try out which is great because I've never tried them. Of the 3 named, I have had the best service from QTE and D&D. Because Bear is in Canada, everything takes longer.
