RabidAlien Posted April 5, 2019 Report Posted April 5, 2019 Nice!!! CV/CVN's made great targets. We did some carrier-group-vs-submarine wargames in the Independence one time. Admiral swore they had us, gave us bearing and range and had at least two helo's dropping sonobouys on our "location". Our skipper kept radioing back saying, "no, that's not where we're at...." Admiral wouldn't believe us, thought we were lying to make them look bad, and demanded we launch a smoke flare. We did. The smoke grenade launched....on the OTHER side of the carrier from where they insisted we were, and close enough that on its downward arc it bounced on the flight deck at least once before falling over the side. They never questioned our bearings again, and there was a case of some sort of adult beverage waiting on our CO when we pulled back in to port. LOL crupiea 1 Quote
Rockytime Posted April 5, 2019 Report Posted April 5, 2019 Every time I see your work I wonder. How does he do that? Would be very cool to be able to watch you work. If you made videos I believe they would be terrific. Jim McDonald and crupiea 1 1 Quote

Blaughn Posted April 6, 2019 Report Posted April 6, 2019 (edited) My squadron was scheduled to deploy on Coral Sea in 1972 but were switched to Ranger. (Ranger had been disabled by a war protester (Patrick Chenowith) who threw a paint chipper and several bolts into her main reduction gears.) This reshuffled all the the deployment pairings. I did a carrier qualification session on Coral Sea but never deployed on her - which is to say I was on board long enough for 10 traps and 10 cat shots but never left the cockpit. That is a beautiful plaque! Bravo Zulu!!! Edited April 6, 2019 by Blaughn RabidAlien 1 Quote
