Rockytime
You young whipper snappers won't know what that means. I had ordered the Stewmac router base hoping I could use it like a plunge router for drilling patterns. Not exactly one of my brighter moves. No way it will work that way. I became so depressed I swept my huge (112 sq ft) shop and then vacuumed up around my saw. I was so exhausted I had to sit down. While pondering my dilemma I had an epiphany. It came after a lot of soul searching. I realized I had the perfect elements for the perfect drilling machine. This winter I will create it. The base and upper part are perfect. I will just machine longer slide rods and re-bore the top slide with Delrin inserts. I feel so much better now. The Stewmac is beautifully made. It should work out just fine. kmmcrafts, davidg, lawson56 and 2 others
kmmcrafts
I got really mad and then depressed yesterday while drilling holes for a puzzle order I was making I noticed the Dremel plunge router base was getting really sloppy and loose.. Thinking about how I disagreed with JT about the plastic plunge router being more accurate than he was giving it credit for.. While drilling a couple more holes later I noticed one of the screws for the uprights turning on it's own... shut it down.. went to the tool box for a screw driver and tighten the screws up.. goes pretty straight up and down now.. I do see where this set up isn't going to stay super accurate for very long... and really it's not as accurate as i first thought but it is doable... and it taught me that I like the little systems of this style / design without spending a good fortune on one not really knowing what to expect.. Don't think it'd be all that hard to build a nice accurate set up similar out of steel.. Be a lot less time consuming to just buy the plunge router from the same place you bought this.. $150 seems steep.. and it's still not make to be used as a drill press.. but I'm almost certain that it'd last much longer than the plastic $30 Dremel one too.. JTTHECLOCKMAN
Les take the two top rods off and turn them upside down. Spin those thumbscrews all the way down so not in the way. Put the spring between the thumb nuts and the top plate. As I mentioned in my last post on this. That main spring is fairly stiff. If you go to Home Depot or lowes and go through those bin drawers you may find a lighter spring. If you do and buy 2 of them it will balance the travel evenly and will not bind. You can also try that bottom spring because it is not as stiff. But maybe a little too short. I did not try that. As I said some tweaking and you can make work if you want to drill with it. You could take the 2 springs off that plastic gem and try those. Edited May 4, 2019 by JTTHECLOCKMAN OCtoolguy

Kevin which screw? I know I don't do the volumn you do, but ... so far it works fine for me I did take off that depth ruler thing and just set the drill depth knurl knob stop I wish the dremel/wen had an LED light on it though OCtoolguy

Probably not enough tension on the springs but if the screws came all the way out the springs might go flying into space, never to be return.. Mine came loose and made the whole plunge portion very wobbly.. OCtoolguy
JTTHECLOCKMAN
I would think adding a light source would be easy. Here is an example of something to get you thinking in right direction. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Light-It-6-in-Silver-Flexible-Neck-LED-Clip-On-Battery-Operated-Multiplex-Task-Light-20010-301/204205348?cm_mmc=Shopping|B|Base|D27L|Multi|NA|PLA|InteriorLighting|71700000038718431|58700004243614128|92700035280812228&msclkid=126be7e9cb12189bab73bb247705ef3a&gclid=CLaoq6OkguICFYG4swod2XoCAg&gclsrc=ds OCtoolguy
ScollSaw Slasher
Keep talking guys. Got that dremel plastic one sitting on my bench waiting to put together. Have had too many honey-dos to even set the dremel into it for a test run. Got to get my priorities straight now that my back is good enough to start scrolling again. I have this router base system for a colt router that I use for precise routing and inlay work. They use to offer a small pen light attachment for a light source but they discontinued making it as it is stated in his write up so they went to a light ring attachment. I do not have this and it is pricy but these accessories are for a highend tool. The idea can be the same weather a small pen light used or a light ring of some sort. With those cheap bases you are better get a small single cell pen light and tape it to the base in some way. https://microfence.com/product/light-ring-kits/ Examples (think outside the box) https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mini-Pen-type-Flashlight-Portable-LED-3W-AAA-Battery-Torch-Lamp/656835749?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=14170&adid=22222222222107490132&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=75110454869959&wl4=pla-4578710025148308:aud-807615483&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=& wl10=Walmart&wl12=656835749_10000014596&wl14=single battery small LED pen light&veh=sem&msclkid=a170bac97e4f1a5e0b38e606664e7f2a https://www.amazon.com/Hatori-Flashlight-Battery-Powered-Emergency-Flashlights/dp/B01M24XPD6 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=single+led+light+battery Edited May 5, 2019 by JTTHECLOCKMAN OCtoolguy

The quote was from a commercial that showed a set of twins.
