Base with blade storage for New Pegas saw

I don't have room in my shop to use the factory stand for my new Pegas saw so I made a base for it to be able to clamp it to my bench. Probably not necessary to clamp it though. It doesn't move at all but I did want the blade storage and to raise it to a more comfortable height for me. Thought it might be useful to others so I am sharing what I did. It is made from some leftovers I had around the shop. I cut some pipe in half for the blade trays in the drawer. Used a forstner bit to drill a piece of 1/4 plywood and cut it in half to mount the pipe pieces to. The drawers slide out because it was the easy way to go. The small gray squares are made from the floor mats that HF sells to help raise the saw to a better height for me. I also made a place for the hold down clamp so it doesn't get lost.

That's a pretty neat trick. And you still have the holes in the saw for tubes if you want.

I really think that drawer storage is a great idea.  Will thought out.  Well you still put the blades in tube while they are in the drawers?  Only reason I ask is I find it easier to shake a blade out of a tube then to try to pick one up individually out of a tray.  Old stiff hands...

Great job on the stand. I wish my Seyco would have been easier to put on a table. The rails didn't fit right for the table method. By the time they made me a new set I had modified everything to have it on a stand. Its running pretty smooth and I hate to take it apart. Like Scrappile says those Pegas saws sure are pretty. If I had known they were coming out with one I would have waited.  Enjoy your Pegas saw. Your thinking out of the box  on making the setup for the table mount. I like it.

Thanks, yes I will use the tubes after I buy them and need more room for storage. Once I get them I will figure out which is easier for me. I was thinking it would be easier to pick up out of the tray instead of dumping the tube but will wait till I try both ways to see where I put the most used blades.

I knew I wouldn't have room for a full stand for any saw I purchased and when I saw the pictures of the Pegas I thought it should work on any flat surface at the right height for me. 

 

The saw is pretty and it cuts as good as it looks. It cuts much better than the single speed Craftsman that I was using.

The thing I most interested about this saw is the table as all the excalibur type saws up until now have that easy scratch surface, which is my only complaint with those saws (and a minor complaint at that).  I'm hoping Pegas tried something different.  If you use the saw heavily, you will be able to tell us pretty quickly if finish holds up better than the prior version.

I don't dump the tube, I sorta shake it until some pop part way out.  Then I grab one of those.

If you think about it.. why even bother putting a finish on the tables? No finish on DeWalts, Deltas ( new or old ) , Hawks, Hengers? and many other brands.. The only saws I've seen with a coating like that is the Excalibur, Pegas, and Jet's new 18" saw has a black finish.. but the 22" I've seen is not coated.. Save some $$ for the company and leave them uncoated.. makes for a ugly look after a couple days of use.. most the finish was gone on my EX after about the first two days.. I mean the finish looks nice.. but I don't care what finish you put on.. it's going to look bad after 6-12 months anyway.. 

Someone on one of the FB groups powder coated theirs.. betting it'll be worn off in 6-12 months... unless they don't use it much..

That's strange. Mine shows no wear at all. I bought it used and have used it some myself but it still has the entire finish. I do wax the heck out of it.

Wife had me order a dump truck load of mulch so it may be awhile before I get to put it to heavy use but I will let you know how the top holds up.

I think their tables are steel, and would rust easily/quickly without the coating of some sort.  DeWalt. Hawk, etc. are aluminum in some forum.  I maybe wrong...

Dewalt is steel. At least it's as heavy as.....

Yeah my DW788 is steel.. as all the other saws I've owned other than the ryobi I had years ago i think was Aluminum.. Old Deltas.. The old Dremel I had was steel too but I think it was the only model of Dremel that had steel table.. because the older smaller ones had aluminum too,, But anyway.. the majority of saws are steel and non coated..  So that's why I've always said.. why bother.. If kept waxed it don't rust..

I'm actually very surprised that any of the saws produced in China have anything but aluminum tables. I know they do everything they can to reduce the shipping weight and going to a lighter table would fall into that category.

That's a great way to to store blades and it takes up no space. well done. I made a rough rack for test tubes and have my blades in them. They do get a bit of dust in the bottoms over time.
