Several of y'all fill the fretwork with something

I have heard clay and bake it, but it seems like some others have a different product to do the same thing.

Product?  ease of use? can you dye it? link?

I don't have experience with clay but I have used stuff called inlace.. It comes in a can and you mix it with a activator.. Comes in several colors.. Problem I have is.. I never have the color I need, LOL 

Not sure if you've ever mixed up or messed with fiberglass or bondo ( body filler in the automotive industry ).. This inlace smells and acts just about like a fiberglass resin.. not as hard as the stuff I've used in the autobody world but it's very similar.. I only have Red and Black colors.. Bought it several years ago for a few certain projects and haven't used it since.. I keep thinking I need to use it up if it's any good still..

Below is a picture of a key rack I made for my son about 2010.. I cut the design out on 1/8" Oak and then filled it with the red inlace then glued to a  1/2 or 3/4 Oak backer.. Guess it turned out okay and still looks good..  I also used to make the oval kaychains Steve Good patterns. and cut them from 1/16 then glue to a backer and fill the cutout with this.. Made those in 2008..and mine that I carry everyday still looking good.

When filling it I would fill it higher than the wood.. then sand it flush on my belt sander..

OK from what I see Kevin has shown we now understand. You can use epoxy resins and tint it any color you want. That is what inlace is. Epoxy resin with stone dust.

Steve good used some modeling clay "filmo" or "sculpy" to do the same thing. I've never tried it though.

In our store, ArtCrafters, we sell Sculpey 111.  Knead the clay and shape it into the area.  Bake at 275 degrees for 15 minutes per 1/4".

I save the pieces I cut out. Paint them and glue them back in on a backer board.

I have used the clay as Steve Good suggested when I did his key chains. Use as Denny and Fred suggested and worked well for me and was less expensive and easy to use. I did do other larger things such as a 3 inch rose with leaves. The rose was red and leaves green I was happy with the results and so was my wife.

I have used 5 minute epoxy (Araldite) and coloured with food colouring, Have also used cheap $2.00 shop eye make-up to colour. Works well
About 15 - 20 years ago there was a stained glass fad and one of the ways to make sun-catchers was to colour PVA. Trace the pattern onto clear plastic using black PVA then fill in the areas with tinted PVA. I'm not sure how long it would last, but there is still a couple of them on Dad's Lounge room window.
