John B
G'day all, I am after some of your considered critique on this piece. The pattern is by Sam Costodio, I posted the complete cut portrait a few days ago. This is the 2nd one of the stack of two. I have cut two plates to go on the bottom, but they looked a lot better (different) in my head. Maybe if I cut them from the same timber (Hoop pine) as the portrait ? I have just rested the plates in the position they would go. GrampaJim, OCtoolguy and Sam777 2
JimErn
I like Pop's place the pic just does not lend itself, IMO, to a shed, but then again "shed" may mean something different down under Beautiful, even though I said that before, the "plates" just add to it nicely OCtoolguy and John B 1

An Aussie shed is like an American "Shop" but not. Sheds can contain game rooms, large screen tellys and lounges to watch the cricket and footy with your mates. They can be places to fix a car, make furniture, paint a picture or throw a pot. The 2 things that you will find in almost every shed are, A fridge for beer and an old radio to keep you company. Some sheds are air conditioned, some have wood stoves and some get bloody cold in winter and like an oven in summer as almost all of them are made from corrugated iron. Scrappile
I think the plates would look better the same color wood as the picture. As is, with the different color wood, I think the over shadow the picture. I see the plates as the main focus. Maybe the is the effect you want, and that is okay for sure. I really like the the picture, great job. Edited May 31, 2019 by Scrappile OCtoolguy and John B
Bill WIlson
I think if the plates were the same color wood as the picture, you might as well just scroll the text into the body of the picture and not bother with a separate plaque. I like the contrast of the plaque, but it does seem to dominate the piece. Maybe if it were a little smaller? Sycamore67
Those are very well done. The only thing that I might change is the back ground color which appears grey. I would experiment with some different colors to see how they look. Fish, OCtoolguy and John B 1
dennis123
The picture is great. Nice job. I think the plates kind of over-power the picture. I think if they were about half that size they would look better. John B and OCtoolguy 1
wombatie
I think they look terrific. But I do prefer Pops Place better than Dads shed. I know a shed is what you want it to be but to me it's a place to store stuff that you don't want but don't want to get rid of. Maybe Dads Place? Just an idea. Kepy
How about if you do the sign in the same wood and then the backer the same as the picture. There wouldn't be quite as much contrast that way. Or at least the sign in the same wood as the picture. Roberta Moreton, John B and OCtoolguy 2
Eugene Downes
Your work looks great. I like the plates, they catch a persons eye and causes them to study the cut out a little closer. I have always loved putting several types of wood on the same project. The picture I am adding was made from 1 inch Red Oak, 1 inch Black Walnut and 1/4 inch Baltic Birch. Half the fun working on the saw is experimenting . The item shown is not one of my better pieces but it was done the way I wanted. The second picture is 1 inch Black Walnut and 1/4 inch Baltic Birch. JTTHECLOCKMAN
Either name is good but I would have made the name plates from the same wood as the frame is to give it contrast. You introduced a small portion of a different colored wood and to me it does not go. Just an opinion. OCtoolguy and John B 1
JTTHECLOCKMAN
Eugene you have shown those crosses a few times and I too have made many of those over the years. They do not sell well any more here. But I have made them from walnut as you did, mahogany, and oak . Ron Johnson
Very fine portrait and nicely framed John but I would leave the plates out even though they are very well done. My opinion is that they are too over powering. I would burn the name (small lettering) into the portrait. It would then focus atention on your beautiful work. teachnlearn
The plates remind me of museum pictures. They always put a plate below with the description and artist. I like to draw, and some schools of thought are to go to a museum and study what they have done. Just drop the plate below and its a museum piece. My life has been a mix of interests that branch as I find things I would like to do. From some of my 'art', that I don't even show, foreground will bring your eyes to it faster and then scan to the background. Your plate draws immediate attention to it. Its your work, if you want the title noticed first, you did that. Scrollsawing to me is taking art and creating a wood picture. I have an opinion, but my wife doesn't listen. Just do what she says. Rolf
John, my first reaction is that the name plates are too big. I would make them smaller so that there is a uniform gap between the frame and the bottom of the cut image. John B
jerrye
I think I'd mount the plate on the face of the frame, just below where you have it staged. Being a different color from the frame and portrait, it will draw attention to itself without overpowering either, IMO. John B
