Rockytime Posted June 20, 2019 Report Share Posted June 20, 2019 I am attempting to compound cut a pattern similar to Steve Good's pattern "Jesus" on one side and "Lives" on the other. I tried cutting it from pine, poplar then bass wood. I have tried Olson skip tooth, Pegas MG and several others all in various sizes and various saw speeds. I find the bass wood cuts the easiest but still very slow and needing far too much feed pressure. I'm a slow scroller but my friend Danny passed away a couple of days ago. He had just turned 80. Now I'm worried. I'm 80 and not in the best of health. I'm worried I may not live long enough to finish cutting this pattern. Jim Ern made the pattern for me and I would like to see it to fruition. I need advice on possible blades others use. Now I'm looking at ordering Pegas Super skip #7, #9 and #10 blades. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. I have cut 3D in ash, oak, cherry and Sycamore with a #5 FD Polar. The PS Super Sharps are my favorites but expensive. I cut on a Hegner with the speed fairly fast. I also change blades when the cutting slows down as the blades do get dulled. How thick is the piece of wood you are cutting? kmmcrafts Posted June 20, 2019 Report Share Posted June 20, 2019 My best advice... Use a different saw On a more serious note.. Hawk scroll saws are slower less aggressive cutting machines.. Any time I'm cutting anything 3/4" + thick stock.. I go to the Excalibur or DeWalt.. this is about the only time those saws really shine better for me, LOL Sorry I don't have any advice on blades.. Gonzo Posted June 20, 2019 Report Share Posted June 20, 2019 Pegas #5 skip tooth will work, or a Pegas MG#5. Pine, in my opinion, is not suited for compound cutting. It seems to grab the blade and wander. I really like using poplar, butternut, and walnut for compound cutting. A slow feed is key. dgman Posted June 20, 2019 Report Share Posted June 20, 2019 (edited) Les, I have cut several compound cut projects lately, all in 1 1/2” Mahogany. The blades that worked for me were Flying Dutchman Polar #7 and Flying Dutchman UR #7. Both worked equally well. I saw on a DeWALT at a relatively fast speed. Even on the DeWALT, it’s slow cutting. I use 2x2 (actually 1 1/2 X 1 1/2") SELECT PINE from Home Depot . My best blade is a Flying Dutchman #5 R. John Old Dust BTW I use the scraps. I cut them as flat as I can and give them to a Pre School facility for the kids to color.
