SSW CD 49 -72

Recommended Posts

NOTE

Fox chapel have assured me that they have now will ship via USPS that will be delivered via Canada Post which will be much more reasonable if duty is due.  They covered the cost with a credit.  Very good customer service.

This is a cross post to Scroll Saw Workshop as information to all and an alert to my Canadian Friends about DHL

Issues 49 - 72 now on CD

Good news - that the issues 49 - 72 are now available on CD. I was waiting for these for some time as I have 1 - 48 on CD. I have all of the 48-72 in paper but I just hate trying to print the pages especially the middle insert. Even to get the patterns in the book are hard to copy as they some times get distorted on the scanner.

NOTE

1. For Canadians beware that DHL is the courier. They charge $20 brokerage fee on top of the taxes. Canada Post only charges $5 and from experience a package sent first class mail would rarely be pulled over and duty charged. DHL, UPS and FedEx are all expensive. If I would have thought that it would not be shipped via USPS, I would have shipped to US address.

2. The insert in the middle is there as a single page. (31 inches by 21) In the first 48 issues, patterns were made to fit on 8 1/2 by 11 and so it was easy to print.

Now you have to be a little tech savvy to get around that issue.

You can open that page in Acrobat Reader and print using the poster feature and that will print all patterns on 12 pages. Waist of paper when you only want 1 of the patterns. Painful if you want multiple copies of an Intarsia pattern.

You can open in Gimp that page and select the pattern you want an play with. If it is larger than your paper size lots of work.

You can open in Inkscape and the select the page. You can then select the pattern you want with a little work. I think the text is all in separate objects. A little tricky to get grouped. Copy to separate file and then size from there. If larger than paper size, I saved as PDF and then opened in Acrobat and used poster feature. Still a lot of work

I really like having the patterns electronically. Too bad insert not the same as before

Also, I only wish that the patterns would be made available with each issue

There are 6 CD's in total.  5 and 6 are latest.

I will subscribe to SSW again when they let subscribers log into their site and download any of their patterns individually so it is easy and user friendly.

I agree Paul. If you are a paid subscriber, you should be able to get any of the patterns as an digital download. I inquired about it once and was told that they were not able to do that. BUT...they will SELL you the CD's? Bad business. I will still subscribe though.

I quit my subscription several years ago.. they use to have some great stories and projects but over the years the stories started fading away and more and more advertisements came.. the patterns are typically scatterbrained from mostly one category and most wasn't all that useful to me..

What really is a shame is the fact that the other magazine went out of business.. but they sure kept the stories and a wide variety of patterns that most everyone would enjoy almost in every issue.. Guess they should have put more paid ads up and they might still be around selling a crappy magazine like the other did, LOL.. sorry.. hope I'm not offending those that love the magazine.. but they really did go down hill IMO.. The other one kept their dignity right to the end and run themselves out of business I guess..  Either case is a sad situation.. Maybe they've upped their game to a better magazine these days? Before i subscribe.. I'd look at the store for a few months worth of issues to see if there is improvement.

I too dropped my subscription 4 years ago and manly because for some unknown reason I was completely banded from their members scroll saw "club"!  Do not know why and was never given a reason and would not  correspond  with me so as far as I am concerned they too can go bankrupt!

Erv

What is a "members scroll saw club"? I've never heard of it. I just look at the magazine for ideas and "how to's".
