Hermit Posted July 4, 2019 Report Share Posted July 4, 2019 I took some time off from the scroll saw after I reached a point where I thought I was figuring it out.. Had to put both dogs down, changed jobs, blah blah etc. The last time I cut something I remember getting a view of the fine mist of sawdust when I had the garage door open, caught the sun just right. I absolutely hate wearing a dust mask. At work I was able to come up with a squirrel cage from a used a/c that was being replaced.Seeing other people use them for air cleaners in their shop, i flipped this one so the air intake is directly above the blade. My whole design was to be able to access the motor/capacitor should either go out. The bottom section contains 2-1×12×12 filters and the option to add a 2"×12×12 or any combination thereof. I added a semi tightly fit cover of 1/8th BB ply to cover the filters. Upper section is just the plenum and a Jobs for the wires. I thought maybe I would need a 3 speed or variable fan switch but after amping it out, speaking with an a/c contractor and having a 40 year retired electrician give their blessings, a normal switch was all that's necessary. Amped out at 4 amps running. Did a incense/smoke test after it was done. Amazing how much smoke it pulled up into the filters so far out in front of the table. Hopefully this will help someone else with ideas of their own. But...I still wear my dust mask because when I'm cutting I'm right over the work and get a lot of fine dust right in my face. I also have a 20 inch box fan to the right of my saw that collects a lot of the dust that is blown off the work as it is being cut. All I have to do is look at how much dust still collects on the inside of my glasses to know what I would be breathing if not for the mask. My advice....wear your mask. You only get 1 set of lungs. Dust settles on the floor and as you walk you stir it up and in the air. There are many ways to limit dust and every layer of prevention is a good one but final layer is a good fitting dust mask. Something that happens in many industries is continued exposure to small amounts of dust, chemicals of the same over and over and the workers become oversensitive. Happens with woodworking. My family and I are messed up, so we are more careful with any chemical, dust exposure. Proably most would filter water and air so much. Use this unit with 2 hoses for going to an attic or mobile ventilation. Moving around apartments hasn't allowed any perment designs, 'Hopefully moving to a house soon'. With this unit bought metal duct pipe and large hose clamps, plywood. Cut a hole in the plywood, pushed the metal duct through the hole. Put a hose clamp on each side to keep the duct in place. Than braced the plywood against the open window. Connected a hose to the inside metal duct. They are used for electronic test/ design benches to get a specific AC voltage. They will change the speed of most AC motors. There is going to be a point of the motor stopping and each type will stop at a different speed. If I wear a brand new 3M dust mask I get virtually nothing on it. Before I went to this set up I would scroll Padouk and have red dust in my nose hair if I didn’t wear a mask. Now? Nothing.
