kmmcrafts
Some of you may have remembered about the #5 MG blades having the notch cutout on them and having some being longer than others etc. I'm wondering if anyone has bought any blades recently and if so.. is the notch still in them? I remember reading on FB where someone said they made them that way on purpose to mark the top / bottom of the blades.. I've basically stopped using the #5's because all they do in my Hawk is break.. so I started using the #3's which seem to be working really well.. I may send BW a note about the blades I got from them.. as they are definitely not right.. every few blades I've also noticed that the last downward tooth just before the reverse teeth has a solid tooth.. ( like squared off and not sharp pointed like the others ) Not sure what they'll say about it since I bought them last Dec. but at any rate what good are they to me if I can't use them on my Hawk saw.. They don't break nearly as often on my Excalibur.. but still break from time to time so it's not just a Hawk issue.. It's definitely a bad batch of blades.. especially the ones with that funky tooth.. I call them snagga tooth blades, .. and I believe they are all kinda dull.. as even in thick wood.. the #3's kick butt.. compared to the #5's Anyway.. just wondering if they still have that notch.. seems to be where mine are breaking at.. I may just stop using the #5's and use the #3s and #7's #5's take about 45 minutes to cut a stick of butter in half.. not with the grain.. across the grain. The ones with the goofy teeth.. not sure what way to put them in.. I've tried both right side up and wrong side up.. on both front and back sides of the blades... yep.. even mounted sideways.. still cut about the same in any of the positions
OCtoolguy
I bought a gross of them about the same time as you. Mine have the notch but I haven't seen any with a snaffle tooth. I started breaking blades in my EX. So I just install the blade higher and put the notch right where the clamp screw is. No more breakage and there are still reverse teeth at the bottom. I can see that you might not be able to do that with the Hawk. I should have sent them back but procrastinated. I'll use them up. kmmcrafts
kmmcrafts
I don't think I could put mine in high enough to clamp as you say.. the notch on mine is about 3/4 inch down from the top of the blade.... I suppose if i lowered the upper arm on the EX I could use them then.. but the arm wouldn't be parallel to the table then.. probably change the way the saw cuts drastically too.. I have 2 gross of them.. did have 3 gross but I used up the one gross I got from DnD.. these ones I have now are from Bear Wood.. it was during the time DnD was out of stock because they was replacing the bad blades.. I got in too late on that deal.. so I ordered from BW..in hopes of getting a good batch.. turned out to be worst yet.. Now I'm setting on 2 gross that will probably end up in the trash.. I'll message BW to see what they say..
OCtoolguy
That's what I should do too. Bottom line is they are Pegas and they are defective. No matter who we bought from or when. I still have 11 dozen. Let me know how they respond to you. I bought mine from DnD.
JimErn
I have some that snap too. Not being in a production environment, its just a cuss moment, and maybe break time. I;ll use up the rest of the pack and re-order - if it continues to happen with a re-order I might have to rethink blade choice, but MG is the best I have run across, so .... Roberta Moreton
I gave away all my #5’s and started buying Flying Dutchman and Sharktooth again. I will not be buying Pegas again. OCtoolguy

I will not be buying Pegas again. This is sort of why I'm trying to find out if they ever got the #5's issue figured out.. I've heard two stories.. 1) is that they ran a bunch of bad blades that got through QC... 2) they are trying to make them marked for what side is top / bottom but messed up some and are experimenting with that process... In either case... Pegas has been my go to blade for a couple years now... and don't think the others have better QC and that they don't get into the hands of the users.. a few years prior to me switching to Pegas... FD ran a whole bunch of bad blades... so they all do get a few bad batches that reach the end user.... I've gotta order a few gross of #3's and wondered about ordering some "hopefully" good #5's hoping they have this bad batch sorted out.. and I could get back to my #5 Pegas.. which was my most used blade. Guess if nobody has ordered and confirms that they now have good blades.. Maybe I'll order a dozen instead of a gross and see what I end up with.. NC Scroller
I am watching this thread as I am low on 5's and need to reorder soon. Like in the next two weeks. I read either on FB or another forum that the "notch" was a defect When the "notch" occurred many people complained due to breakage. I further read that D and D replaced all the "notch" blades with defect free blades. Another major Pegas sell did not. Take that with a grain of salt as we all know everything we read on the internet is true. Anyway D and D is where I normally get my Pegas blades so I will probably order from them. Scrappile
Can't you call or email DnD and ask? JTTHECLOCKMAN and OCtoolguy 1
OCtoolguy
You can call Qtena here in So Cal and get some info. They are good to deal with. I bought my Pegas clamps from them. Great fast service. I called them once with a question and got a real, live person on the phone.
OCtoolguy
To update, I emailed DnD and they affirmed that the notch was an attempt at something that didn't work out and there are no more "notched" blades. So, I guess we can all breathe easier and reorder as needed. Scrappile

NC Scroller
I took Paul suggestions and emailed D & D. I also took it one step further and contacted the US rep for Pegas. Neither came out and said it was a quality issue or a process change that failed but as Ray reported the notch is no more. The Pegas rep, who is the National Sales Manager for Grobet the USA who is the US distributor for Pegas, told me they replaced the notched blades that were turned back in. So if you still have those suspect blades contact Grobet USA and they should replace them.(email@grobetusa.com). For me I am comfortable and will be buying more blades this week. I just sent off an email to Grobet USA and explained my situation. I can't produce any paperwork for my purchase but I know it was from D & D so now, I'll wait to see what they say. I did ask for the procedure to replace my blades. I only have about 11 dozen left. kmmcrafts

I just sent Bear Wood a message.. I have receipt in my bookkeeping files so i have proof of purchase with order number etc.. at one point I had 4 gross of these.. I only ordered 2 gross from BW.. so the others was from DnD.. But I used them and some of the ones from BW.. I have not as many as i thought I did but I do have 1 gross that hasn't even been opened yet and most of the second gross.. scrollingforsanity
Purchased Pegas #5 from Qetna about three months ago or so and they were the newer batch. no problems. I do have some with the notch from last year and have not had one of them break. ( yet ) Have not noticed the bad tooth on those. Should have no problems getting the good blades now. grizz kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy
kmmcrafts
Just thought I'd let everyone know that I sent a message to BW last night with my order number and the info needed to prove that I bought the blades from them.. They returned message this afternoon saying they was sending out 2 gross of new blades right away.. I guess that means I have to take back the negative comments I've said about BW.. I don't like ordering from them because they take forever to get here.. compared to DnD.. But then.. DnD also gives good customer service and they have advantage over BW because they are in the U.S. and BW is Canada.. Anyway, I'm happy to throw these blades in the recycle bin.. Thanks everyone for all the comments.. OCtoolguy and NC Scroller

Rockytime
I order from Bear Woods. It takes a little longer to arrive but their shipping charges are reasonable. I did order my last blades from D & D. Good service also and they include a neat little catalog of the different woods they carry. Scrappile
http://qtena.com/ good service, and great prices also. I prefer to order from DnD though, only because I think they are a smaller business and I like to support the smaller business' when I can. They've always been real good to me and get my products typically 2-3 days.. BW took 2 weeks just to process my order and get it in the mail and another 1+ in the mail system... Maybe because I caught them at Christmas time.. but DnD was quick.. Also love the small drill bits that DnD sells.. they come in plastic tubes with a cap.. just like some of the blade storage tubes.. but mini ones LOL NC Scroller and OCtoolguy 1
