Me Too.. My uncle lives right behind me and owns a excavating business and a hobby sawmill.. he's retired now from the excavating but still owns the all the equipment.. anyway.. I think maybe he just switch careers because that hobby mill is running an awful lot, Got some real nice slabs of Walnut yesterday.. live edge stuff etc.. he was just gonna burn it, LOL.. and my brother has been in the mill business since 1975.. he is just 5 mile up the road.. He just gives me cut-offs etc.. which turns out pretty good.. I give him all my planer sawdust.. right now sawdust prices are way up there and he has a hard time not just grinding up his logs into sawdust, LOL

Ok, Who's the guilty party hoarding wood. Filled the shop already so they creep out to their 20x 20 rented  storage shed at night to stash more wood. With all this wood kicking around I'm surprised there haven't been posts on spare wood to sell. Anyone hear an Auction Bell? RJF

You sound like me too... and that is why I try my best to stay away from the two local mills.. LOL.. I end up bringing a truck load their scraps home..

I've thought about selling at one time .. but the problem is and I've seen it and had it happen to me.. You buy some nice looking boards and by the time they arrive in the mail they are cupped twisted and grew knots in them, LOL... I feel like with all the dis-honest people too.. one that sells lumber is just asking for angry customers and or customers trying to pawn off their junk wood as being the wood you sent them but it's junk.. You'd almost have to keep records of the wood you sold with many photos for proof from those that are dis honest and it really seems as though it could be more hassle than it''d be worth..

I work 100% with baltic birch. 99.9% of that is 1/8"

super fortunate that here in san Diego there is a place called TH&H hardwood that sells a great selection fo whatever wood you could imagine.  They sell mainly to people who make rich people custom cabinets and yachts and such so a simple 5 x 5 of bb is about $12.  Almost the cheapest stuff in the place but thankfully, lots of guys use it for some sort of cladding in yachts or something like that so they always have a ready supply.

Look for a specialty store in your town if you are in a decent sized city, Almost guarantee they have a place like this. 

Sorry got side tracked.  I live in an apartment and just have the wood stacked up along a wall.   I save pretty much all the scraps so I have a lot of boxes of them and find myself using those all the time.   if you toss out your dining room furniture, you will find that you have all sorts of room for wood!!

Normally, I do not use plywood.  I do not do fretwork.  I do inlays and make toys.  I purchase cedar  and maple from a local building supply house, as needed.  The wood I use for inlay (walnut and hard maple) I purchase about a years supply at a time.

       Because I am the most active member in our local woodworking club, any wood donated to the club, I receive.  Because of this, Most of my  wood, used for making toys, is free to me.  Mostly poplar.

I typically have between 10-20 pieces of 1/2 inch hardwoods that are 6-8" wide and 8-16" long. I cut bigger pieces down to smaller sizes that work for most of my projects, are easy to store and are ready to go. I also typically have 10-20 square feet of 1/8" baltic birch plywood cut in to pieces. I also have a lot of scraps and random pieces that "could be useful", but I am making a better effort to use or throw those.

Sometimes I find that having to make a trip to the lumber store can derail my inspiration for a project, so I like to have some stuff on hand.

I just gave my son's girlfriend a 8x13x8 box packed with craft supplies that were either leftovers or were stuff bought for "someday".

I generally have some wood on hand in case something jumps out at me. I have already bought wood and got patterns glued for the 6 to 8 special Christmas gifts I do each year for siblings, etc. This year it is 6 of Steve Good's 6 layer Nativity. Scene will be 1/4" butternut and thr back and lid will be walnut. Start cutting Saturday morning.

I rarely buy wood on line except BB now that my supply has burned down. I do not use much of it so no big deal. Now I will buy a piece of real exotic to make a pen or something small because some of those true grade AAA exotics are expensive. But I get to hand pick my selections which I know what I am getting. I love woods in the Rosewood family. and any burls that are available but those are the ones that get pricey.

I have quite a bit of lumber on hand these days.  From pallet wood, to sheets of birch, to a nice collection of hard and soft woods I'm still afraid of ruining if I attempt something with them LOL

My pallet wood stock pile is more than enough for at least another 2-3 years worth of scrolling and/or projects.

I don't hang onto wood so I'm curious. Why hang onto hardwood, or softwood, for years when it could be made into a beautiful cabinet to look at every day? RJF

In my area... collecting wood could be a full time job going around getting all the free lumber.. then you'd not have time to make something with it, LOL

Wood storage is the biggest problem I have in my shop. Doing Intarsia is the main culprit, as every little piece of it can be used. 

So in answer to your question yes I keep a supply on hand. 

I also do lots of projects for SSWWC and need to have wood available for a quick turn around.

     I totally get the "never want to use" part. I have 2- 3/4" x 8" x 72" pieces of Canary wood and One piece the same size of Bloodwood that I bought in 2000 that traveled with me to Panama City, Panama,  Mazatlan, Mexico and now they languish in my wood closet here in Tucson. Their time is coming, I hope. There's also Zebra wood, Wenge, Lace Wood, Pauduk, Yellow Heart, Purple Heart and others keeping them company. I bought $300 worth of wood from Ocooch when I bought my Dewalt, intending to do some intarsia. Got side tracked.

Not trying to be sarcastic. Coin collectors, collect coins, but spend time sorting listing and looking for others to add to their collection. Lumber tends to be heavier and is a usable product, like screws, glue, hinges. People collect antique hardware, then put it in their place to display it. With the lumber hidden in the shop in a stack, its out of site, isn't it?

I don't live in a glass house, but an apartment with kids that run on the ceiling from 7 in the morning to 11 at night. Please come over and throw stones at their window. Until we get out of here, we sit and think nasty thoughts. RJFv

Just a thought. Make a coffee table with the legs and frame. Lay out various pieces of your prized wood on top and it can be rotated. Probably with the lumber weight, don't have to screw it down.

Take some spare unused lumber, lean it against a wall. Tape a cheap mirror to it with double sided tape. Usable mirror with a fine piece of lumber framing the outside. RJF

I am kind of surprised at some of the comments.  I have several pieces of wood that I am saving for the right project.  They have something special about them...a beautiful piece of Koa, Tiger striped maple,Birds Eye Maple, etc.  Eventually, I will make a box, Intarsia, puzzle or something else.  The pieces are not big enough for a cabinet or table

I guess I am the so called guilty party in someone's mind.  I do not really understand the comments or the need for them.  I am sorry you do not have room but nothing I can do about that.

100% on the same page. Along time ago I stopped worrying about whether I make sense to other people. I have no need for a coffee table and I have several mirrors.
