I always look to see what isn't there. Because to make it up to current specs, it costs a lot of money. But with that said, for $100 you could take a chance on it. You'll get a lot of scrolling out of it if the motor is still good. I did a lot of studying and questions before I bought the one I did. The lever near you for tensioning is the big thing. Otherwise, all the tensioning is done at the rear of the saw away from you. But, a little 14 inch saw isn't that bad. I've been watching one near me that has come down to$280 and I thought about offering him a $100 but then, I thought, why do I need another saw. Especially one that I would have to spend at least $300 to get it to where it should be. I paid $300 for the one I had and it had all the updates and the factory stand. I turned it for $700 after playing with it for a while. Charley L is the person to ask. He gave me a lot of info on the Hegs. The big thing that I think would bother me, and it's just me, I don't think that saw has variable speed. I think it has a belt that is used to change speeds. But, if you want to play around with a Hegner, not a bad price. I'd have to at least go check it out. Well, if you are anything like me, I can't pass up a deal and if it's something that I know I can make a few bucks on, what the heck, why not? You have to loosen the tension to switch blades or do hole changes of fret work. That would seem to be a lot of turning or the knob, but maybe not. There is one up here a 18", newer model with the insert table, quick release clamp, stand, up front tension release, says it is like new and it looks it from the pictures.... $425 and been posted since 7/6. Saws just don't sell up in this part of the country. Several Hawks, 2 Excaliburs a 21" and a 30" that all look real nice been listed for several weeks.... Maybe everybody is afraid of the rain or something. It is strange how different parts of the country have better luck at selling stuff. Here where I live, there are 35 million people so there are a lot of lookers/buyers for almost anything. Too bad those Ex's aren't down here. The saw is so small so the reach is close. It certainly won't replace my Hawk. I could even use it in the basement in the winter if I don't want to heat my shop. I have never had the privilege of scrolling on a Hawk. Maybe some day the right deal will come up. To replace it I'd need a full size Hegner. My hawk is set up so conveniently I would hate to do everything over again. My saw is on wheels out of necessity. Dust collection is set up. I'm too old. I am very short on energy. I walk with a cane so getting down to do the smallest jobs are a real chore. I'm fortunate to have had my shop built perhaps 15 years ago. Three years ago I got rid of my large machine tools and a friend built new benches and shelves for me. I am no longer able to do those things. So I just sit at the saw and enjoy life every day. The tension knob at the back is broken but I can replace it or make a new one. It is variable speed and runs smooth as silk through the entire range. I don't think I would sell yet. It is a cute little bugger. I can perhaps use it as a decorator piece in our picture window. I have pictures but I can't get them to load for some reason. I put them in a photo editor before posting but I can't get them into the editor. I'll work on it and post photos later. I had the opportunity to grab one of the 14" Hegners for $70 on a stand last year but my brain wasn't working correctly and I passed on it.. mainly because of the single speed and no up front blade release.. I do wish i'd have grabbed it now.. They did give me all the blades and a box of parts.. that turned out to be bunch of big blades I'd never use.. and the parts were Hegner blade clamps and the rear tension springs things.. Rockytime Posted July 23, 2019 Author Report Share Posted July 23, 2019 Well I got my rust bucket cleaned up. I removed the arms, cleaned them and lubricated the bushings. Looking a little better now. It was filthy and every steel part was rusted. Chipped paint on the stand. This saw was unused for many years. The lady selling it said it was her fathers and she kept it to make things when her kids were in scouts but said she never could figure out how to use it. It's been sitting a very long time.. All it needs is the tension rod at the rear of the saw. Hegner wants $61 for the rod and two wedges. Not gonna happen. I'll make one tomorrow. The spring is rusted but certainly usable. Hegner wants $10 for a replacement. Not gonna happen. I does run smooth as silk through the entire range of speeds. It will be a great little saw. It has taken some serious rearranging to make room for it. It's not ideal but is workable. It required moving my drill press outside the shop but that's OK. Also, I don't know how far you got with their site as to reading about the new saws as compared to the old ones but I found this updated tension lever/device that is retrofittable to your older saw. I did a couple of test cuts today after making my tension rod. Hegner wanted $62, mine cost $3.17 for the knob. The saw is virtually vibration-less from 0 to 1750 spm. Smoother than a baby's butt. I can't believe they stopped putting that on the new saws. Anyway, enjoy your new toy. I know you'll love it. I liked the one I had except for the speed problem. I'll be looking for another one.
