smitty0312 Posted August 8, 2019 Report Posted August 8, 2019 (edited) I’ve been asked to make some chunky letters 8” tall for their grandson to learn his name & play with....what would be the best/strongest wood for this? Also the safest as he may chew on them. Edited August 9, 2019 by smitty0312 Quote
dgman Posted August 9, 2019 Report Posted August 9, 2019 Pine is too soft. I would use poplar or hard Maple. smitty0312 and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
jollyred Posted August 9, 2019 Report Posted August 9, 2019 Any of the fruit woods, such as apple, would be good. I just made my great granddaughter a rattle out of cherry. Just be careful of the finish you put on it. Although they really don't need to be finished, I do anyway, just to keep it a little cleaner looking. If you do finish it, let it sit for at least a week to be sure all the solvents have evaporated. smitty0312 and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted August 9, 2019 Report Posted August 9, 2019 Maple. smitty0312 and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
teachnlearn Posted August 9, 2019 Report Posted August 9, 2019 (edited) I would go with a nice sugar cookie dough. Roll flat, bake and cut. Should be quiet safe. RJF Guess I should backup my remark.
