I have found a sample to be cut to test if you would like to try wooden gear clock making. It can be found on the Brian Law site at www.woodenclocks.co.uk and is an ideal way to find if you have the patience/aptitude and skills you will need. I have always admired the wooden geared clocks. I have one started, actually all the parts cut out and started assembly around two years ago. Something was not right about my assembly and I decided to set it aside for a little while. Well it has been longer than a little while. Mine is the Ascent from this site: https://wooden-gear-clocks.com/ The plans are very well done and the seller is very nice to work with. I have done the three robots from his "Robot Laboratory" and have the plans for doing the Puffer Steam Engine. The robots were very fun to build, they all worked and fun to play with. The first picture below is what my clock is suppose to look like, if and when..... The second picture is my clock partially assemblied. I made a couple cosmetic changes to mine... should not affect the way it work....if it ever works. don watson Posted August 30, 2019 Author Report Share Posted August 30, 2019 @octoolguy, Hi Ray, glad you got that to open, I posted here as a .dxf and I have a .dwg file that I am trying to open with the Librecad (when I figure how that works). Can you print out the pattern at the right size for cutting ?? It is a simple 2 gears attached to a piece of wood and if sized and cut correctly is a very pleasing project.Good luck with it. We are trying the Genesis clock from the book and have cut a couple of gears from ply, The ply was NOT Baltic Birch plywood and it shows in the finished gears, this is why we are determined to get the correct plywood. I will attach a couple of pics. @Rockytime, Hi Les, I normally use/d DraftSight but they are no longer supporting the free version after the end of December 2019. I have downloaded and installed LibreCad and I am trying to use it for my CAD drawings. It's not much different but at 80 years of age it is another challenge along the way. LOL @Scrappile, Hi Paul, Your clock is looking very good. I believe you are allowed cosmetic changes, faces, hands etc. and these can be quite personal, it is the actual gear sizes and pitches between them that need to be quite accurate to get the clock to run. You have made a very good start with the Ascent and Jeff has a really good business going with the full range of goodies from bare drawings up to the full laser cut ready to assemble kits. It would be a heartbreaker to do all that careful cutting and then find those voids. I will start gathering the best wood I can find and begin my mental buildup. We have been quoted a new set of prices from our joiner (who gets the trade price) and will be ordering next week. The new ply is guaranteed BB/B (whatever?), it will have a flawless front face and may have some butterflies in the other face. We may need to order a couple of sheets of the 6mm as the scroll saw group and the Pyrography group would like to use it. Just a tad bit disappointed, but it's neat piece of art. Made mine out of BB plywood. I could not get mine to run either but I do still have the plans and I really like the wooden clocks. May give it another try, some day. don watson Posted November 5, 2019 Author Report Share Posted November 5, 2019 The hands are being made by the Scroll Saw Squad, I hope to see the clock finished next week. The electronics were bought from an American firm and there was all sorts of taxes etc to pay to get them released from the Post Office.
