Clayton717
I'm not sure Jim, but here is a website that has lots of wood species with pictures and descriptions. It may be of some help. http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/ ... s/#letterA

Hartwood
It looks like Alder.
Clayton717
To me it looks to grainy and dark red for alder. Is it from the U.S. or from overseas somewhere?
cjswoodcrafts
clayton, its from africa, its a hard wood to cut, i saw a pic looks a bit like afzelia, but lumber yard thinks its LEOPARD WOOD so i dunno
Clayton717
It's not leopard wood, leopard wood has distictive spots in it. it does look like the wood "Santos Mahogany" that Art said, but its from south america. look at this link http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/ ... antos.htm,. I'll look through some of my exotics and see what I can come up with. Does it look red or more of a brown?
cjswoodcrafts
Clayton, it looks more brown then red, with some black grain lines

inspirations
Hi Jim this could be JARRA FROM AUSTRALIA Brian
Eagledrum70
Could possibly be Teak . I did a frame out of scrap hardwood flooring it was Teak and it kinda looks like that . They have Teak at my local WoodCraft store and it looks like that. Eagledrum70

cjswoodcrafts
hey all, thanks for the replies on the help, well i took it to home depot, they thought it was mahagony, that wasnt it, so i went to lowes, front desk told me to go back to the flooring dept, where they have exotic wood, and they put the piece of wood next to all their wood, and the closest we can come to is chestnut, same exact grain and all, but we will make a trip to where i got the wood from soon as my truck is fixed again, so i guess for now this is one of the world's mysteries that just don't want to be solved. thanks again all Jim
wdkits1
From the color and grain I would say African Padauk or an off shade of Bloodwood. If the sawdust is irritating to the sinuses Padauk.
