I just finished this a few days ago. It was my first attempt with spiral blades, and I broke 18 blades grand total!! Towards the end though, I figured out what was happening, and didn’t break another blade! This was an extremely fun project, I am looking forward to do more with spirals in the future.

I would like to know what you figured out so that I don't make the same mistakes. Info please?

Scruffydog,

Two things seemed to help a lot. First I took apart my clamps, my bottom one seemed dry, so I oiled it. Also, since I was top feeding, I began by clamping the blade in the bottom clamp first, and then attaching it up top!  This allowed me to pick a flat part to clamp in the bottom where I was always clamping and unclamping. Every time I fed the blade through, it would land at the same flat spot again, leading to much easier clamping, and less blade slippage and twisting. After these two things were changed, I only broke one blade! :)
