Good News...Bad News

Good news first...My blades came in!! I now have new toys...Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5, #3, #1, and #2/0 ! Bring on the tight stuff!!

Ordered from Wooden Teddy Bear  on Fri. delivered Mon. fast!

I was looking around the web for scrolling stuff and found Rapid Resizer. In their designs was a KC Chiefs arrowhead! I grabbed it and used the letter stencil maker to put CHIEFS under it and print it out, so far so good. Out to the shop I go with my new pattern, cut some wood and prep for cutting. Started cutting the black squiggly line around the arrowhead...got blues playing on the stereo...loud...just as happy as a clam. Got to the end of a line...and the center...MOVED...! Oh No! I did it again! I was so excited about making a cool pattern and the wall plaque that I forgot to check it for islands.

This time is not as bad as the love on the buck & doe...I'll just glue the center to the backer board when I finish it up.

I'm thinking (very dangerous) if I cut the RED out of the KC and leave the black lines it will look like the K is over the C like the photo. What do you think?IMG_0825.thumb.jpg.64c24d58bae9bde0b4846c89924d72bd.jpg

See, you just customized a customized pattern.  I started using Rapid Resizer for stained glass patterns back around 2008 or so. It works well for sizing scroll saw patterns but I need to use other software to actually attempt to create something.   Like someone once said. so much wood, so much glass. So little time.  lol

Good news is that it looks good & you have already found a solution to the problem.

I think if you drill one hole on the outside of the black line and cut the outside, don't cut the two lines across the "C" and then cut the red out of the inside. What you have left should be the black outline of the letters, just paint that black. Paint the backboard were needed red  and glue the letters over the red and the arrowhead to the backboard. Hope that makes sense.

WOW!! I was out in the shop and cut out the CHIEFS with one of my new FD UR #1 blades. That is SO much easier to cut with and make sharp corners! Glad I got two doz. of the #1...I think I found my favorite blade! Thanks Denny Knappen for suggesting them!!

Well...it's coming along. cut out the K & C this morning, made a backer and painted where the arrowhead outline will be black. Thought I had some red paint...must be out. I'll run up and get some after lunch. If all goes well I might have another picture this evening.

Then I have to learn how to make frames, as I am starting to accumulate things that need to be framed. May have to cheat and make square corners till I learn to make 45 Deg. corners tight.

There was a long topic on here a while back regarding making a simple corner sled for your table saw. Rockytime, I think, started it. Do a search.

I got real B/BB plywood in a few min. ago! This will be better...I can see layers like standard plywood, not like that stuff I got at Lowe's. That stuff would probably be really good for backer boards, or open type patterns with no tight spots. I'm thinking about experimenting with a light stain like Honey Maple or Golden Oak. What do you folks think?

I always ( well most of the time ) use Minwax Pre-Stain. Then I used Minwax Puritan Pine stain lightly.

I'll let it dry overnight and glue it all together in the morning. I may finish it up with a Minwax Polyurethane gloss or satin.

I just set it together to see what it will look like. Had a little problem with the E on this one. Next time I think I'll make the CHIEFS a little larger. That and the real B/BB plywood I got today should make it a lot easier.

That looks great. You did well.

Thank you! I now have good plywood,  DF #1 blades, and the knowledge of what to avoid and how to cut this. The next one of these should be easier!

I hear you did a thread a while back on a table saw sled for making picture frames. I didn't get it to com up a while ago, do you have a link or remember the title to search for? I need to start making frames and could never get one to come out right in the past...lol.

I don't recall the thread but tomorrow I can get a picture of my sled.

Stop speaking about my Denver Donkeys like that!

Les, I'm still a huge fan of the Broncos. It's a shame how far they have fallen. When we lived in Woodland Park, we owned a Hallmark Card shop in Colorado Springs and I used to have a small t.v. on the front counter on Sundays so I could watch the game. It amazed me how many of the liitle ladies that came in were Broncos fans. Remember "The Drive"? Best game I ever saw. I almost felt bad for Cleveland.

Here are a couple of photos of my frame sled. It is crude but accurate (enough for me anyway). I made a first one the after seeing all my mistakes I made this one. Still lots of things I would change. I spent $20 for Delrin strips for the runners. They would have been ideal except the six foot piece had a bow in it. Stuff was impossible to straighten. I should have just ripped a 1" (3/4") board. It would have worked as well. The clamps aren't necessary. Others here suggested a strip of 80 grit sandpaper to grip the frame material. Also my saw is just a small collapsible Kobalt from Lowe'd. It does everything I need to do quite nicely. The sled is used with the blade at it's highest position.
