Seyco Dust Collector

I set up the Pegas scroll saw at ArtCrafters for test drives, demos, and lessons.  Since this is an art gallery, we had to keep the dust to a minimum.  I installed the Seyco Dust Collector on the Pegas saw.  It was an easy install, but I used a couple of extra zip ties to hold the hoses.  The vacuum is connected to the foot pedal, so that it will be on only when the saw is running.  After some time, I will give an update.

I've really thought about buying one of these.. there have been a few people report that they liked theirs.. I went to buy one not long ago and they are not on Seyco's website anymore so.. not sure what that's about..

Can't wait to hear what your thoughts are on it..

Nice clean setup.  I look forward to reading your review.

I have my dust collection setup with my vac also.  I do a lot of detail fret work and I've often wondered if it is good to have the vac (Fein) going on and off all the time as I change the blade from one hole to the next.  Lately, when I am scrolling like that I switch the switch so the Fein stays on.  I can still use the foot peddle when it is in that mode.   I have no signs that it hurts the vac to go on and off a lot, so I don't know if it is a valid concern or not..... probably not.

@kmmcrafts. just checked and it is listed on their site now...

It is on the Seyco site under scroll saw accessories.  A bit pricey at $180.

Ray at Seyco included a three point plug adapter, so I plugged both the saw and vacuum into the foot switch.

Bit pricey but.. it can be contained right to the saw / stand.. and have you priced a high end " quiet vacuum " such as a Fein or Festool ? Then add the dust separator to it.. and if you was moving from place to place.. the bigger vacuums would have to be toted along too.. I feel the set up isn't too bad priced when you factor that stuff in..

Read an article years ago about clock motors, hard drives, old filament lights. Went along the line that the initial start torque lead to early failure. Turning computers on and off every day was harder on the hard drive again from the initial torque. Lights had a initial surge. Seen some forums go round on it. Its a life test of a vac that runs all the time against a vac turning on and off? RJF

Kinda pricey for sure. I had a Dust Deputy but it was very tippy and clumsy so I gave it away. I recently purchased a DustStopper from Home Depot for $40. Pick up at store and hooked up to an old Filter Queen vacuum. Sits on a 5 gallon bucket. Very cheap and inexpensive. The vacuum runs constantly. Since the picture the extra long hose on the vacuum has been shortened and it all tucks out of the way under the small table.

I bought a three way plug and plugged my shop vac into the dust port of the Excalibur and the dust was real minimal.. The issue for me was the noise of the shop vac... I could lug the big ol shop vac upstairs and cut a hole in the floor to run the hose down to the saw.. But I use the shop vac a lot for other things too.. not really wanting to cut a hole in my floor either.. I've been thinking about one of these mounted to my saw from Seyco or a Fein or Festool.. watching for used ones for over a year.. Not much luck finding one.. yet.. Fein is much cheaper than Festool.. Festool has a dealer right at the place I go to get my lumber and plywood etc.. Fein gets expensive as well once you by the HEPA filter set-up.. Maybe that isn't needed.. at first anyway.

I wonder what the little vacuum is. It sure would take up less room and be easier to move around. The Filter Queen vacuum I use runs constantly and only gets warm. The Hegner DC sort of works it is not worth the $80 or so I paid. I works on a kind of ridiculous premise. I'll rework it when I get upset enough. Some have spoken sometime ago about what some called fireplace ash vacuums. I'll have to google them and see exactly what they are about. I like the tiny footprint of the Seyco system which would allow it to possibly be hung under the saw stand. Also it would not take much to make a separator for a quart jar. I'm just brainstorming. I do everything to maximize space in my little shop. I'll stop rambling for now.

I have a ash vacuum, and i wouldn't recommend it to my enemy... This thing i have is louder than any vac I've ever used.. and the not a whole lot of suction.. while you don't need a lot for the fine dust really.. but the noise is terrible.. I read somewhere too about those.. maybe they have a different model.. Mine is a Cheeta II vac.. I think that's what it's called.. Nothing more than a vac motor top to and a spark resistance filter bag thing and a 5 gallon metal pail..

I did some research a while back on the Seyco vac and found just the vacuum on another site.. was a lot of digging to get that info and I lost the bookmarked page.. Think the price was like $100 ish.. You got me thinking again.. maybe I need to research it again..

I just googled ash vacuums. Not satisfactory. I have a couple of Oreck hand held vacuums. Rolf has a very nice collector. Simple to make and the Oreck is not that loud. Sycamore67 also has a very nice system on his Hegner. His collector orifice is directly below the blade which is more effective than the Hegner system which is off to the side.

Well just doing a quick search online for Seycos model number for the vac.. and I found these.. not all that cheap and it's different from the photos above.. The photo Denny posted it shows like a filter or muffler type thing on the opposite end from the suction hose.. I'm assuming that is sort of a muffler thing if these are the same.. as this one is much louder than the one Seyco sells.. Seyco list it being 62db noise level and the one from the link below shows 75db

Also a couple of them used on eBay for around the $50 mark

Look at Dust Deputy on Amazon, $50-60 I think, and also on You Tube for all kinds of setups. Also a DIY version.

I had a Dust Deputy and gave it away new and unused. It is too tall and tippy and also needs a full size vacuum. Took too much room. A rather clumsy system. The $49 Home Depot Dust Stopper does the same thing and is compact. It works good. It is just that the Hegner collector is somewhat awkward. I'm gonna redo it. It's an $80 joke.

I was going to build one for my shop so size was not a concern...bigger is better :)

I had a vac exactly like this mgr under different name. The collection is small and the filter will jamb with saw dust fast. RJF

Les, the label on the vac says "Vac'NGo 500".  Not sure of the mfg.
